Cerro Rico

Potosí, Bolivia

Cerro Rico — places to visit in Potosí
Cerro Rico in Potosí — view 2
Cerro Rico is a mountain overlooking the city of Potosí, historically significant for its rich silver deposits exploited since the Spanish colonial period in the 16th century. The mountain's mine tunnels snake deep within, and at its peak, visitors can witness both the remnants of a once-thriving mining industry and views of the surrounding highlands. Explore the area around the mountain for a deeper understanding of the mining culture, including the Casa de la Moneda, where silver coins were minted. The altitude can be challenging, so take your time and prepare for the thin air. The stories of the miners are palpable, etched into the very stone of the mountain.

A half-day tour of Cerro Potosí — explore an active mine and learn about local mining history and culture.

The trip unfortunately did not occur due to a mix-up with local providers in Potosi. We were guided by KOALA TOURS, who took us on an incredible journey but made an error by including us in their tour. When they requested payment, we explained that we had already paid and expected reimbursement from INTI TRAVEL. They refused, which I found quite disappointing. The local cost was 260 BOB for two, while Viator charged us 442 BOB, so they aren’t incurring a loss. This money will be deducted from the local guides' salaries, which is unfortunate. I urge Viator to reconsider this situation and reimburse Koala Travel for their service. Until then, I will avoid using them in the future. Please review this case and take the right action. Three hours exploring Potosí’s Rich Hill mines — see traditional mining practices, mineral veins, and statues of cave deities amid a rich heritage.

This experience is truly unique, although it may not be suitable for anyone with claustrophobia. Engaging with the miners and hearing their personal stories highlights their working conditions, leaving a powerful emotional impression. It far surpasses simply watching a documentary. Be prepared for tight tunnels, where you'll occasionally need to crouch or sit.isabelrf2019 on the Half-day tour of the Potosí mines tour
