A half-day tour of Cerro Potosí — explore an active mine and learn about local mining history and culture.
This half-day tour takes you into one of the active mines on Cerro Potosí, offering insight into the historical significance of the town and the ongoing mineral extraction. Potosí, established in 1546, was once the site of one of the wealthiest silver mines in the world, and it remains an important mining hub today.
As you venture into the mine, you'll witness the working conditions and daily routines of contemporary miners. Expect to engage with the local culture, which has been shaped by centuries of mining history. Be prepared for the high altitude, as Potosí sits over 4,000 metres above sea level, and ensure you wear sturdy shoes suitable for a mining environment.

The trip unfortunately did not occur due to a mix-up with local providers in Potosi. We were guided by KOALA TOURS, who took us on an incredible journey but made an error by including us in their tour. When they requested payment, we explained that we had already paid and expected reimbursement from INTI TRAVEL. They refused, which I found quite disappointing. The local cost was 260 BOB for two, while Viator charged us 442 BOB, so they aren’t incurring a loss. This money will be deducted from the local guides' salaries, which is unfortunate. I urge Viator to reconsider this situation and reimburse Koala Travel for their service. Until then, I will avoid using them in the future. Please review this case and take the right action. The mine raid is truly remarkable. Our guide, a former miner, has a deep understanding of his community's harsh realities and delivers an engaging description of life there.
This tour was fantastic! You buy gifts for the miners and then receive clothing (boots, pants, a jacket, and a helmet with a lantern). Our guide, Sol, was humorous and incredibly knowledgeable. She spoke English flawlessly and had firsthand experience working in the mine.
It was great to have Wilson, a miner, as our guide. He provided in-depth insights into how the cooperative operates and the journey to become a member. He shared stories of luck, misfortune, superstition, and safety. Wilson was thorough in answering all our questions. The walk into the mine hall was fascinating; although we didn't see anyone working, we heard many explosions. Unfortunately, the dust from the explosions forced us to turn back.
This tour offers an incredible experience, allowing you to walk deep into the mine and observe the workers at their tasks. While it’s somewhat disheartening to witness their working conditions, the adventure is truly enjoyable. I highly recommend it; it’s definitely a must-do.
An experience of unique intensity, made special by our attentive guide, José. I would highly recommend it without any reservations.
This was a one-of-a-kind experience in an authentic mining environment. The guide was knowledgeable and reliable, providing a wealth of information about Bolivia's history.
The experience was unforgettable, thanks to an incredible tour guide. I highly recommend this tour. A representative found us around the pickup time, and our guide, Jose, had excellent English skills.
The visit was enjoyable, though it was sometimes hard to witness the miners' working conditions. The guide was captivating, and the interactions with the miners were quite moving.
If you want a thorough experience, this isn't the tour for you. Unlike other tours that allow you to light dynamite and explore deeper levels of the mines, we didn’t go down at all. The logistics were quite frustrating; I was directed to the National Mint but ended up at a different office across the street. Then, the guide took me on a five-minute walk to a hotel nearby, where another customer was waiting, so we could don our gear. Afterward, the bus took us to another office for them to gear up as well, and we repeated this process on the way back. It seemed disorganized. However, the guide was quite nice, and the experience had its interesting moments.
