Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (Whittier Tunnel) — places to visit in Whittier
Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (Whittier Tunnel) in Whittier — view 2
The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, often referred to as the Whittier Tunnel, is a 2.5-mile vehicular and railway tunnel that connects Whittier to the surrounding regions of Alaska. Completed in 1943, it is the longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel in North America, carved through granite and designed primarily for military purposes during World War II. Visitors can experience the unique journey through this single-lane tunnel, which alternates access between vehicles and trains. It’s especially impressive in winter, when the surrounding snow-covered landscapes provide a stark contrast to the tunnel's dark interior. Whittier itself is a small but interesting town, with options for hiking and waterfront views nearby.

This experience was truly incredible. The crew was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. I loved the Salmon Chowder, and my friend was a fan of the Veggie Chili. During our tour, we spotted seals, otters, breaching orcas, and even witnessed a large section of glacier calving. The crew also provided us with fresh glacier ice for our drinks.PupuleMenehune on the Glacier Quest Cruise from Whittier tour

We had a fantastic day. Our captain, Ryan, was excellent, sharing plenty of interesting information that was easy to hear and understand thanks to the PA system. The experience went beyond our expectations, as we got within a quarter of a mile of the Harvard glacier. While there were good views from inside, I was mostly outside on the deck. I can't think of a better way to spend a day in Whittier.CARLA_P on the 26 Glacier Cruise in Prince William Sound from Whittier tour
