Two hours on a boat and guided rainforest hike — spot crocodiles, howler monkeys, and end with manatee watching on the return journey to Placencia.
This guided tour starts with a half-hour boat ride through mangroves to Monkey River village, where the adventure continues upriver into unspoiled rainforest. Expect to see a variety of wildlife including crocodiles, iguanas, and tropical birds. Your licensed guide will lead you into the jungle looking for howler monkeys, whose calls echo through the trees, creating an unforgettable auditory experience.
During the hike, you'll learn about medicinal plants used by local bush doctors and might catch glimpses of various wildlife like gibnuts, deer, and tapirs. After your rainforest exploration, enjoy a local meal at Miss Alice’s restaurant. The tour wraps up with a manatee-watching segment on the boat ride back to Placencia.
Reviews
The trip to Monkey Island took nearly an hour each way on a basic motorboat, which was a bumpy experience. We made a stop to check headcount for lunch, not included in the tour price, where there was only one option: rice and beans, fried plantain, chicken thigh, and water for $10. We spotted a few monkeys, two crocodiles, several iguanas, and one manatee, along with numerous birds. The guide was knowledgeable but somewhat hard to understand. Overall, the tour was average, and we returned with sore backs.
This was a fantastic tour. Our guide had a wealth of knowledge and I would definitely recommend it to others. We observed many birds, and although the Howler monkeys were resting in the treetops due to the rain, we were thrilled to spot manatees on the return trip. The tour company excelled, and the lunch was enjoyable as well.
We arranged our tour through Splash Dive Center, with Junior as our guide. Having grown up in Monkey River Town, he shared extensive knowledge about the local plants, wildlife, and the town's history. We spotted a variety of birds, howler monkeys, crocodiles, and bats. Lunch at Alice's in Monkey River Town was excellent, and on the return boat ride, we were fortunate to see a couple of manatees. This was an incredible experience in Belize, made even better by our outstanding guide, Junior.
We had an amazing day at Monkey Town and on Monkey River. The educational boat ride with Splash Dive Center was fantastic, allowing us to see a variety of animals while learning about local plants and their medicinal uses. A hike in the rainforest revealed howler monkeys and numerous bird species. Since our fellow passengers were photographers, we frequently paused to appreciate the wildlife. We also spotted a crocodile, manatee, turtles, and many different birds. Overall, it was a truly memorable experience, and I highly recommend it.
Junior, our captain, picked us up promptly for an enjoyable trip to Monkey River. We dined at Alice's restaurant, then ventured up the river where Junior expertly highlighted local wildlife and plants. We spotted manatees, various bird species, crocodiles, leaf cutter ants, and howler monkeys. After returning to Alice's for a tasty meal, we made a few stops to see more manatees before heading back to Placencia. Everyone had a wonderful time, and I would certainly recommend this experience.
I had a fantastic experience with an exceptional guide named JR. The staff at the Dive Center were extremely kind. JR was amazing—knowledgeable, friendly, attentive to our needs, and sincere. I strongly recommend booking with them.
We encountered all the animals and enjoyed an amazing journey.
The bird and wildlife sightings were exceptional, including howler monkeys, manatees, herons, and ibises. Your country is truly beautiful.
The tour with Junior was fantastic! His extensive knowledge of local flora and fauna impressed us. We encountered a variety of species, making it one of the highlights of our journey.
Our pickup from the condo was seamless, and we were warmly welcomed at Splash Dive by our guide, Junior. He was friendly and knowledgeable, sharing names of all the birds and mammals we encountered. We observed howler monkeys, various bird species, a crocodile, and even some manatees. It was a fantastic day out, and I highly recommend it.
