Full-day guided trip — two-hour drive to Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, cave climbing, swimming, and exploring Maya artifacts.
This full-day guided tour begins with a two-hour drive from Placencia to the village of Teakettle, followed by entry into the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. The tour involves adventurous elements like climbing, swimming, and crawling through narrow spaces to explore the cave system regarded as Xibalba by the ancient Maya.
Inside, you’ll find stunning cave formations and dry chambers leading to a vast main hall adorned with artifacts and sacrificial remains. Visitors walk through the cave in socks to protect the artifacts on the floor. A final climb takes you to the stone sepulchre where the Crystal Maiden is located. Prepare for an active day and wear comfortable clothing suitable for climbing and swimming.

The pickup was at 6:30, followed by a 2-hour drive where we met our guide, Francisco. He was dedicated to ensuring everyone had a fantastic experience and shared a wealth of information about the local bugs, plants, and Mayan history. Francisco encouraged questions and was honest about any limitations in his answers, all while maintaining a friendly attitude to make everyone feel welcome. He ensured we had ample time to explore the caves without feeling rushed by other tourists. The homemade lunch he provided was some of the best local food I've tasted. The caves are fascinating due to their historical and cultural importance, but it was Francisco who truly made our visit unforgettable. I was pleasantly surprised by the flat and easy hike to the cave, which had minimal bugs. The warnings about river crossings were helpful, especially given the water levels. There were sections where swimming was the only way to navigate. If I could change one thing, it would be to have brought towels and spare clothes, as there’s nowhere to find them after swimming. The damp clothing made the ride back a bit uncomfortable, but overall, it was an amazing experience. We returned to our hotel around 6 that evening, so be prepared for a full day out.
Cameras are officially prohibited, which is disappointing, but it helps avoid the chaos from social media influencers. It was truly an incredible experience. The walk from the parking area to the cave entrance is relatively easy, and the activity within the cave is moderate. It's an experience that everyone should have.
This tour was truly outstanding. Francisco and Hakeem were both fantastic. It was evident how passionate Francisco is about Mayan culture, and we were all impressed by his deep knowledge and wonderful sense of humor. It was a remarkable day. Thank you!
An unforgettable adventure. Everyone mentioned it as their top tour. It was captivating and one-of-a-kind. We participated on Halloween, exploring the Mayan underworld, Xilbaba, or "Place of Fear." It was wonderful to witness and engage with this living history museum and sacred site. Don't think twice about booking this. We’re eager to return!
I absolutely loved it! Francisco was fantastic, full of knowledge and made the experience enjoyable. You won't find a tour like this in the U.S.
This guided cave tour offers a one-of-a-kind adventure, showcasing Mayan ceremonial pottery and human remains. Be prepared to get wet, so pack some dry clothes for after the tour. Expect unstable footing and tight areas, plus we spotted small fish and bats.
The tour was outstanding. My son and I appreciated that Kylen picked us up from our hotel and drove us for two hours in a private car to join the tour bus close to the park where the cave is situated. He provided a wealth of information about Belize during the scenic ride. The ATM cave experience was both fascinating and enjoyable; we loved climbing and swimming through the cave. Our guide, Briten, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, making the adventure smoother thanks to his expertise in the caves and Mayan history. My son, who loves climbing, got some extra challenges tailored to his interests. Observing the artifacts and skeletons offered a valuable lesson in Mayan history and culture. One part of the cave trek is done in just socks, which can be tough on the feet, and this experience is not suited for those who are claustrophobic. All in all, it was a very enjoyable tour, and I highly recommend our guides.
We enjoyed a fantastic tour to the ATM cave departing from Placencia. Initially, we were with Jason, but later switched to Robin, who was excellent. His extensive knowledge of Belize and his vehicle suited our family perfectly. After a two-hour drive, we reached the cave entrance and met Jahir Awe from Sur Real Adventures, who guided us during the cave tour. With only six people in our group, which is the maximum per guide, Jahir's engaging personality and expertise kept everyone entertained, especially our kids aged 10 and 12. Although it was crowded since we visited on Easter Sunday, the experience was remarkable, particularly seeing the Mayan remains at the end. Jahir managed our time well, making this a truly unforgettable adventure.
Jason was a fantastic tour guide and travel expert during our excursions in Belize. He was friendly, professional, and enjoyable to be with. We had an amazing experience and strongly suggest Truly Wild Belize for anyone looking to explore this country.
We arranged several tours with this company, and they were fantastic—very helpful and accommodating. On this particular tour, we had Manuel and Jahar, who were both incredible and insightful. Our group had a great time with them and learned a lot!
