Two hours cruising the waterways of Queen Charlotte Sound, delivering mail and supplies to residents, with optional stops for sightseeing along the route.
This two-hour cruise through Queen Charlotte Sound offers a glimpse into the historic mail delivery service that has operated by boat for over 150 years. As you glide through the stunning waterways, the skipper will make stops to deliver rural post bags, groceries, and freight to local residents.
Guests can purchase a keep cup for $6 at the office before departure, which allows you to enjoy complimentary tea and coffee on board—single-use cups are not provided due to environmental considerations. Be prepared for a scenic journey filled with local stories, and check in will provide you with the planned route for any potential sightseeing stops.
Reviews
This was an exceptional experience. It offered a fantastic opportunity to appreciate the beauty and isolation of the Sound. The unique element of mail delivery added a charming twist to the trip. I would strongly recommend it.
This trip was fantastic, with insightful commentary and sightings of dolphins, rays, and seals. We stopped at a memorial for Captain Cook at the beginning of the Queen Charlotte Walk. One thing we weren’t aware of was the need to bring our own cup for hot drinks.
We enjoyed four fantastic days on the Queen Charlotte Track, though we didn't complete the entire trail. Each day involved an easy 12-16 kilometers, with the convenience of the mail boat for daily travel to and from Picton. Our accommodation was a delightful waterfront apartment, conveniently located near pubs and restaurants. Beachcomber was excellent, allowing us to adjust our schedule based on our pace and weather conditions, plus we benefited from a 10% discount for booking multiple days. We highly recommend this approach to exploring the Queen Charlotte Track; it was very relaxing and enjoyable. The afternoons spent waiting for the boat back to Picton at Punga Cove and Furneux Lodge were particularly pleasant, as both places have nice cafes and bars.
It was a lovely afternoon spent cruising the Sound under the sun with sparkling waters, visiting some small, remote bays that enhanced the experience. The commentary was generally good, though it lacked some intriguing details, but was easily audible from the upper deck. I enjoyed conversing with the pilot, as some of his insights would have made engaging commentary. I noticed a square brown disk being handed out at each stop, initially assuming it was a delivery token, until I saw it was dog biscuits being given directly to a friendly dog.
The cruise was quite enjoyable. However, there should be improved access for getting on and off the launch, as it was quite challenging for elderly individuals like myself at 84 due to the significant gap to step over.
The transport was comfortable, and the skipper provided excellent commentary. The scenery was fantastic, and the experience overall was enjoyable. There was ample space for everyone on board, and we chose to stay on the top deck throughout the trip, dressed warmly for the brisk breeze.
The mail boat cruise was a wonderful experience, especially with the unique idea of transporting tourists' bags for their hikes. The crew was welcoming, and the check-in personnel provided great service. Arriving via cruise ship made everything fit together seamlessly. We enjoyed seeing seals at the king salmon farm and captured some beautiful photos of the scenery.
I found this experience quite fascinating. Although the weather wasn't ideal, it was an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon, navigating the boat based on the conditions. We assisted in delivering mail and grocery parcels to customers who could only be reached by water, and even provided biscuits to their dogs. We did see some wildlife, though not as much as we had anticipated. Skipper Greg was both fun and knowledgeable.
Our afternoon on the Queen Charlotte Mail Cruise was simply stunning. The calm waters and clear autumn skies created breathtaking scenery that felt almost unreal. Dylan, our skipper, truly enhanced the experience with his insightful commentary and obvious passion for the journey. Watching him engage with the local dogs waiting on jetties for their mail and treats was delightful. This was definitely the highlight of our trip, and I highly recommend it!
The cruise was excellent, and while I'm happy to provide feedback, I'm not going to write an essay about it.
