Pico on a fork. Walking food tours through the markets, cooking classes with local chefs, tasting flights at the bars worth your time, and a couple of long lunches that double as the day's plan.
With a dash of adventure in an incredible natural setting, we will unveil a secret unknown for many: the unique volcanic Pico wines, and the people who make it all possible. Intertwined with the local communities we curate encounters and tastings you wouldn’t otherwise be able to live, EXCLUSIVELY with independent wine producers. This heroic wine comes from vines that grow from lava soil and flourish on the rock. All the work is done manually and none of this has changed in 500 years, when the first settlers introduced grape growing in Pico. After our walk in the landscape of Pico Wine, to refresh our feet, we drive you to one of our favorite natural swimming pools, in an amazing setting or just lay down for a bit, exchanging more local stories and preparing your appetite for the next stop. Finally, we take to a wine tasting in a beautiful setting with an emergent and promising awarded independent local producer. You will experience all the landscape and history in your mouth!
Embark on a journey through Pico Island wines' history, which began in the 19th century with global exports. Discover the importance of its volcanic land, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Explore beautiful vineyards, learning about challenges in a landscape shaped by recent lava flows. Pico's winemaking story reflects human resilience and innovation in overcoming natural challenges. Our adventure begins at the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004, providing an immersive experience. Throughout, you'll hear about efforts to preserve the distinct identity of these exceptional wines and witness the revival of ancient vineyards, shaping Pico's landscape and supporting new wine producers. On the tour, visit a producer to taste Pico Island's wine culture and experience the legacy of a land defined by volcanic soil and the ocean's influence.
Czar Pico wine is unique in the world, say wine critics and scientists! Its price can reach more than 1000€ per bottle, reflecting the History it carries and the risks taken by its producer: Fortunato, who owns some of the oldest Verdelho, centenarian vines. With a perfect balance between acidity & sweetness, Czar wines reach 18 degrees of alcohol exclusively from fermentation, differentiating it from liqueur and fortified wines (like port wine), to another category. The unique Czar wines! Because grapes are harvested very mature, strong wind or rain can tear these gold grapes to the ground and destroy all harvest. This year we are lucky! Fortunato just bottled the 2015 harvest and we have some from previous years exclusive for wine tastings. Aged for 8 years in oak barrels, limited to 1000 bottles. We saved some for you! Join us in this exclusive wine tasting, meet the producer & taste limited editions of Czar Pico Wine you will otherwise not be able to find in the market.
Take a trip back in time, discover the old winemaking traditions, that still remain in place today and make it an obvious choice for UWH designation. Walk through its vineyards and taste their exclusive wines.
With Art of Wine you will be able to have access to exclusive vineyards thanks to Fábio Rocha, the winemaker guide. You will have a winemaker showing vineyards, providing wine tastings and explaining all the particularities from this Unique Terroir that makes these wines so special and unique
If you have accepted the challenge of climbing Pico Mountain, congratulations! With us, the climb will be at your pace with a dedicated Guide. Calm down because we have all day just for you. Meeting at the "Mountain House", if you do not want "transfer included", it is time to check if we all have the proper equipment, protection, food, water and of course, the camera. Our guide will accompany you along a trail, much of it in very irregular volcanic rock, which will require some effort and care. . Reaching the summit, the effort is rewarded by breathtaking, breathtaking landscapes. First the crater, then the last stage: the Piquinho. This, with its 70 m high, will give more "fight" but inevitable to achieve the goal: 2351 m altitude, the highest point of the island of Pico, the Azores and Portugal. You will also see the 'fumaroles' that show the grandeur of the (dormant) volcano. Land Tours wishes you a good climb!
