Heritage walks, museum days, temple complexes, and the kind of guides who explain why a place matters rather than reciting dates. The cultural side of Pico, paced for actual seeing.
With a dash of adventure in an incredible natural setting, we will unveil a secret unknown for many: the unique volcanic Pico wines, and the people who make it all possible. Intertwined with the local communities we curate encounters and tastings you wouldn’t otherwise be able to live, EXCLUSIVELY with independent wine producers. This heroic wine comes from vines that grow from lava soil and flourish on the rock. All the work is done manually and none of this has changed in 500 years, when the first settlers introduced grape growing in Pico. After our walk in the landscape of Pico Wine, to refresh our feet, we drive you to one of our favorite natural swimming pools, in an amazing setting or just lay down for a bit, exchanging more local stories and preparing your appetite for the next stop. Finally, we take to a wine tasting in a beautiful setting with an emergent and promising awarded independent local producer. You will experience all the landscape and history in your mouth!
Embark on a journey through Pico Island wines' history, which began in the 19th century with global exports. Discover the importance of its volcanic land, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Explore beautiful vineyards, learning about challenges in a landscape shaped by recent lava flows. Pico's winemaking story reflects human resilience and innovation in overcoming natural challenges. Our adventure begins at the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004, providing an immersive experience. Throughout, you'll hear about efforts to preserve the distinct identity of these exceptional wines and witness the revival of ancient vineyards, shaping Pico's landscape and supporting new wine producers. On the tour, visit a producer to taste Pico Island's wine culture and experience the legacy of a land defined by volcanic soil and the ocean's influence.
Thematic visit about the history of the Pico vineyard from its beginnings to the present day. The vineyard from planting to the final product.
Czar Pico wine is unique in the world, say wine critics and scientists! Its price can reach more than 1000€ per bottle, reflecting the History it carries and the risks taken by its producer: Fortunato, who owns some of the oldest Verdelho, centenarian vines. With a perfect balance between acidity & sweetness, Czar wines reach 18 degrees of alcohol exclusively from fermentation, differentiating it from liqueur and fortified wines (like port wine), to another category. The unique Czar wines! Because grapes are harvested very mature, strong wind or rain can tear these gold grapes to the ground and destroy all harvest. This year we are lucky! Fortunato just bottled the 2015 harvest and we have some from previous years exclusive for wine tastings. Aged for 8 years in oak barrels, limited to 1000 bottles. We saved some for you! Join us in this exclusive wine tasting, meet the producer & taste limited editions of Czar Pico Wine you will otherwise not be able to find in the market.
Explore the wildest and most authentic side of Pico in an experience centered on nature, volcanic landscapes, and the tranquility of the island's interior. This route leads to the Central Plateau, one of the most pristine areas of the Azores, where the altitude reveals a landscape dominated by endemic vegetation, volcanic cones, and a unique atmosphere. The highlight of the experience is the Lagoa do Capitão and Lagoa da Seca — places of mystical beauty, surrounded by pure nature, where the silence and the landscape create an unforgettable atmosphere, with privileged views of Pico Mountain and neighboring islands. The experience also includes a brief encounter with the cultural landscape of the UNESCO vineyards, before heading to the coast. Here, the traditional villages of Cachorro, Lajido, and Arcos reveal the historical connection between man, stone, and the ocean, with their typical houses and striking views
A buggy tour on Pico Island, which leads tourists along stunning trails, through UNESCO World Heritage vineyard landscapes and volcanic landscapes, offers a unique experience of adventure and discovery. During the tours, I share my knowledge about the history, culture and nature of the island, explaining from the geological formations to the viticulture in the basins. It is an opportunity to get to know the wild and authentic side of the island, making every trip fun and memorable.
