You will get to taste some unique "madurai" dishes, such as paruthipaal (cotton seed milk), thennam kuruthu (bark of the coconut tree), bun parotta, the super delicious Jil Jil Jigar Thanda etc.
Madurai has its own personality after dark — and it isn't the same in every neighbourhood. The list below covers the rooms we'd take a visiting friend to: a craft-beer pub for the early-evening pint, a rooftop with the view, a speakeasy where the staff still cares about the cocktail.
Most premium pubs in Madurai open by 6 PM and run until 1 AM (last call typically 45 minutes prior). Smart-casual works almost everywhere; some rooftops enforce closed-toe shoes. Most accept cards but a few of the older bars are cash-only — worth checking before you go.
