The experience provided a deep dive into Hawaiian culture, guided by someone who grew up on the island and truly enjoys his work. I discovered more about Hawaii’s beliefs, history, and the island's evolution than I anticipated. Jason’s authentic and enthusiastic personality greatly enhanced the day. At the end of our time together, he shared links to excellent local attractions and playlists of music that I appreciated throughout the day.
This tour is a fantastic opportunity to explore Hana. We valued the skilled driving along the winding roads and the hidden gems, particularly the waterfalls and the hour spent at the black sand beach state park. Our guide, Dell, was outstanding. A little advice: if you're staying in Ka’anapali or Lahaina, be prepared for an early pickup at 6:00 am and a later drop-off, making it a lengthy day. Additionally, while the tour description mentions visiting Jaws, a well-known surf location, we discovered that it’s not easily visible. Instead, we only saw the entrance to the beach during this tour.
The excursion lasted over 11 hours, mostly spent on the bus. Our driver wasn’t particularly friendly; he was a former teacher who lectured us extensively and had a negative attitude towards American mainlanders. Most of the attractions were just drive-bys, with only four stops. This was our worst experience of the week, and I feel it wasn't worth the time or money.
The tour began unpleasantly when the guide informally reprimanded us for being at the wrong pickup location, despite my confirmation of the specified details in the emails. While the guide had good knowledge of the island, he began to repeat himself as the tour progressed and didn’t respond to the questions we asked, leading us to believe he might have difficulty hearing. The van was also in poor condition, and the air conditioning was ineffective, making the ride quite uncomfortable. Overall, I cannot recommend this tour.
Dell was an exceptional driver with extensive knowledge about Hana and the rest of Hawaii, navigating the roads expertly. After hearing about some other guests' stressful experiences driving rentals, my wife felt more at ease and was thrilled to explore the stunning sights of Maui, including waterfalls, breathtaking views, and a black sand beach. On our return, we stopped to observe surfers and wind surfers at a public beach where we were delighted to see around 50 sea turtles resting. Dell truly made our day memorable.
