The experience was quite disappointing as we missed the sunset and the stars. Michael was an excellent guide and made a strong effort to enhance the experience, but the weather was not on our side. The food was enjoyable, but considering the price of the excursion, we left feeling let down.
Our guide Mike did an outstanding job. As we made our ascent up the 10,000-foot mountain, he entertained us with his extensive knowledge and delightful humor. We took a break at a lovely bistro, where my included lunch featured the most delicious crabcake sandwich I have ever tasted. I savored it while admiring the stunning view of fluffy clouds and the sun reflecting off the Pacific Ocean and the Maui coastline. Mike also assisted us in preparing our cameras for a breathtaking sunset. The highlight for me was the stargazing, as I had to look closely to spot the constellations among the countless stars.
The tour guide was engaging and amiable. The food was tasty, and the sunset was beautiful. It was quite windy and chilly, so bringing a hooded jacket is advisable. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

We initially booked a sunset dinner tour with another company that never arrived, which turned out to be a stroke of luck as we had an incredible experience with Bike Maui / Haleakala Ecotours. Our group of eight was guided by Michael, who was also our van driver. He did an excellent job sharing fascinating historical insights about Hawaii. Michael ensured we had an outstanding stargazing experience, and when the weather deteriorated at Haleakala’s summit, he took us down to 7,000 feet. The conditions were still poor there, so he continued to 5,000 feet where we were treated to a spectacular view of the stars. After the chilly sunset, he offered us hot chocolate or tea. Michael truly deserves more than 5 stars, and we highly recommend this tour.

From the moment we were picked up, he shared insights about Hawai’i and Maui, covering history, geology, and botany—he was well-versed in everything. Dinner was delightful, and the hot chocolate provided after being outdoors in the cold was a nice touch. Stargazing after sunset was stunning, and having ample time for it made for a wonderful conclusion to our time on the mountain. I highly recommend this tour, and we’re likely to do it again on our next visit.
