Five hours by private vehicle — visit Chacchoben's Mayan temples and relax at Mahahual beach with beach facilities included.
This private tour lasts around five hours, starting with a visit to the Chacchoben Mayan temples, offering an intimate opportunity to explore these ancient sites. Note, however, there is no historical guide provided, but entry allows for photos in the scenic surroundings.
After the temples, the tour kicks off to the village of Pedro Santos for a stop to buy fresh fruit before heading to Mahahual beach. Here, enjoy the beach facilities, including chairs, tables, and beds. There's also an optional tequila tasting available. It’s advisable to bring mosquito repellent, especially when exploring the temples.

I had a fantastic time with Johnny. The tour of the ruins and the beach experience deserves a solid 5 stars.
The Chacchoben Mayan ruins were fascinating. Our guide, Saul, was extremely knowledgeable and had been involved in some of the excavation and restoration work. Our driver, Jhonny, was easy to locate at the terminal exit and successfully got us to the ruins before the large crowds arrived. We even had some time at the beach, making it a wonderful day.
Our private tour to the Mayan ruins was enjoyable, especially with a knowledgeable guide who explained the history well and addressed our questions. However, our driver had limited English skills, which made the 45-minute drive less pleasant. After the ruins, we felt pressured to eat at the Mahahual restaurant, leaving us no time to enjoy the beach or do any shopping afterward.
This experience was incredible, and the staff was fantastic and easy to collaborate with. They were very accommodating and ensured we enjoyed ourselves, which we truly did. The driver was friendly and provided a wealth of historical information throughout the ride. Our tour guide at the ruins was also outstanding, demonstrating great passion and knowledge. We also visited a stunning beach resort where the food was exceptionally tasty. We chose our own fresh fish, accompanied by delicious sides. I would definitely recommend this tour. Thank you for making our trip enjoyable and unforgettable!
We booked the Private Tour to Chacchoben Mayan Temples and Beach and found it disappointing compared to the description. Upon arrival at the port, we were surprised to learn that we had to walk a long way outside the gates to meet our contact. We were introduced to Johnny and our driver, but it turned out to be more of a taxi service than a private tour with a dedicated guide as promised. While the driver was nice, his lack of English made communication difficult. At the Chacchoben ruins, we encountered a local guide who was friendly and knowledgeable, but his limited English hindered our understanding of the tour. We then traveled for about an hour to the beach, where we found out that snacks weren’t provided as mentioned in the description, requiring us to purchase our own food. Although we tried to remain flexible and make the best of the situation, it did not meet the expectations set in the listing. Having used Viator multiple times in the past with my family and enjoyed great experiences, this one was particularly disappointing. I share this feedback in the hope that future guests have clearer expectations.
We received a warm welcome and everything was well-organized. It was a wonderful experience for the family, and it was truly relaxing to have someone greet us in an unfamiliar place.
Booking this experience was a great decision. Jhonny and his team provided exceptional service. My husband, three kids, and I felt well looked after. We gained valuable insights into Mayan history and enjoyed the scenic beauty of Costa Maya. Our driver, Jose Luis, arrived in a clean, comfortable, air-conditioned taxi with music and water, driving us safely and courteously. He was accommodating when our youngest needed to head back a bit early. Our guide at Chacchoben, Saul, was friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to engage with our children, addressing their curiosities about the local wildlife and nature. He even spotted a family of spider monkeys, allowing my kids to capture numerous photos, which thrilled them. Saul shared his background working on Chacchoben’s restoration, and his passionate connection to the site captivated me. We concluded our outing at a lovely beach in Mahuahil. There were ample shaded lounge chairs, the guacamole was tasty, and the staff was very helpful. The only downside was finding the meeting point, which was farther from the port than anticipated. Make sure to walk along the pedestrian walkway, as it may feel like you're going the wrong way, but you’ll eventually find it. I only wish we had more time before departing for our cruise. I highly recommend booking this experience; it’s truly worthwhile! Thank you, Jhonny, Jose, and Saul. It was delightful.
Having booked more than 20 private tours globally, I can confidently say this experience ranks among my top five. It was outstanding and showcased exactly how a perfect private tour should be organized. From the moment of booking, communication was excellent, and we found our guide right outside the cruise terminal exactly as instructed. The entire day was flawlessly managed; we didn’t have to plan a thing. My family opted for the Mayan Ruins followed by beach time. The vehicle to the ruins, approximately a 40-minute drive, was spotless, spacious, and air-conditioned to perfection. Upon our arrival, a private guide was ready to assist us; he was knowledgeable and patient, especially with my young children. After exploring the ruins, we visited a fantastic beach with several sandbars for the kids. Although it was quite busy when we arrived, our tour guide had set us up with a personal server, who efficiently took care of our needs. We were led to the ideal spot without waiting for chairs. We enjoyed delicious Mexican cuisine and fresh lobster. When we were ready to depart, our car promptly arrived, cool and prepared to take us back to the ship. I can’t emphasize enough how impressed we were with this day and the tour company. I look forward to utilizing their services again on our next visit.
I arranged the tour with Johnny as a shore excursion, and he was exceptionally helpful in sharing details about it. He quickly answered all my inquiries through WhatsApp. Unfortunately, due to medical reasons, I had to cancel my trip. However, since I canceled 24 hours in advance, Johnny was understanding and issued a full refund.
Our driver Rickardo and guide Saul were both friendly and pleasant. However, my mom was quite uncomfortable with the high speed of around 120-130km/hr that Rickardo maintained, and he used his phone a few times while driving. We overtook every vehicle, which seemed unusual for the area. On the plus side, Rickardo did offer us bottled water, which was appreciated. I had thought this was a private tour, so I was taken aback when I learned we could either keep it private without a guide or have two others join us for a guided experience. I might have overlooked some details when booking, as I specifically wanted a private tour considering my mom's limited mobility. Unfortunately, no special accommodations were made, and she could only reach the first stop at the ruins. Although we tried to go slower, she often lagged behind and missed much of the commentary. In retrospect, arranging just transportation to the ruins for a self-guided tour might have been better. Saul did bring reference books, which was a nice touch, and he offered bug spray. Separately, finding the port exit posed a challenge, and it's a considerable walk, so keep that in mind when booking. On our return, we stopped at a beach area for shopping, but the vendors were quite pushy, which made us uncomfortable, leading us to leave and sit back in the van. Overall, the experience was okay, but it didn't meet our expectations.
