Reviews
Seeing polar bears in Churchill, Canada, is best done through this tour. The entire experience is meticulously organized and suitable for all ages and skill levels. Meals at local restaurants may not be extravagant, but they are quite good. Accommodations in Winnipeg and Churchill are clean and adequate, without being extravagant. The tundra buggy rides are exceptional; we observed over 12 bears daily, including a mother with her cubs and some sparring males. The buggy is cozy and roomy, equipped with many viewing windows and an outdoor deck. Food and drinks are accessible on board, along with restroom facilities. The town tours provide insightful information about local culture, history, and wildlife. The dog sledding was a unique and enjoyable experience, even if brief. We were fortunate to witness the Aurora on our second night. Our guide was excellent, keeping us updated about the aurora and sharing knowledge about the animals and history of the tundra. FN was a wonderful operator, ensuring everything was efficiently planned and executed. If you're looking to see polar bears, this is the way to do it.
This journey was truly unforgettable from the very beginning. Our three-night stay at the tundra lodge exceeded all expectations with excellent accommodations, delicious food, a comfortable tundra buggy, and engaging cultural presentations. Mark, our driver, and Jason, our guide, were both outstanding—knowledgeable, passionate, and entertaining storytellers with a delightful sense of humor. We had the privilege of spotting polar bears, red foxes, arctic hares, stunning scenery, and even witnessed the Northern Lights. As we reflect on the trip, we feel a profound sadness in leaving, but we are incredibly thankful for this extraordinary experience. We hope to return in the future, perhaps for the belugas.
We recently returned from a trip to Churchill with Frontiers North and were thoroughly impressed by the seamless operation of the company. Each detail, from our accommodations to transfers, flights, Tundra Buggy ride, and meals, was handled excellently. Our Buggy 13 driver, JP, provided lots of information and expertly spotted bears. We are grateful that our wishlist items were all accomplished on the first day. The Buggy was very comfortable with a maximum of 18 passengers. Our guide, Josh, was patient and addressed all our questions, while shuttle driver Jamie took us to see the stunning Northern Lights despite the cold. We appreciate how you made our trip unforgettable.
Incredible experiences that are truly unforgettable. It provides a glimpse into nature within a stunning setting. My expectations were quite high, and I can happily say they were met.
Our polar bear expedition with Frontiers North was beyond our expectations, featuring over twenty bear sightings, including at least 16 unique individuals during our two-day tundra experience. We also encountered ptarmigans, arctic hares, and red foxes. While the wildlife viewings depend on luck, nearly every fantastic aspect of our trip was due to the dedication, expertise, and friendliness of the team at Frontiers North. From our arrival in Winnipeg, we were impressed by the quality of food and accommodations, seamless transitions between activities, and clear communication throughout. Ward Cameron, our tour guide, was exceptional—attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about polar bears. Markus skillfully maneuvers the tundra buggy to maximize our wildlife encounters. Additionally, meeting the dedicated staff at Polar Bears International added depth to our experience regarding bear conservation. Although we considered staying at the Tundra Buggy Lodge, we chose to stay in Churchill and were glad for it. We still enjoyed plenty of polar bear sightings and appreciated getting a taste of life in this unique community (don’t miss the Northern Store). Our stay at the Aurora Inn was comfortable, warm, and well-maintained. I also want to mention utilizing Frontiers North's gear rental service. While the prices were somewhat high, renting a parka, snow pants, and boots was more economical for us (as Californians) than investing in gear we wouldn’t use again. The gear pickup and drop-off in Winnipeg was incredibly convenient.
This trip was truly incredible and well worth it to witness polar bears before their numbers decline due to climate change. We participated in the classic polar bear adventure, arriving in Winnipeg on October 28, 2024, where we met our guide for a briefing. The following morning, we flew to Churchill and explored the small town, completing everything in about 1-2 hours, including visiting the polar bear jail and having some free time. October 30, 2024, was the big day for polar bear viewing. I was quite anxious about limited sightings because of the weather, with forecasts predicting strong winds when bears usually stay inactive. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a fantastic day, and despite the wind, we spotted over 30 bears. At one point, bears were approaching from all sides, making it hard to keep track. One of the guides mentioned it was the highest number of bear sightings he had experienced in one day. The following day, October 31, 2024, was a relaxed one full of great food and informative presentations, along with visits to museums. On our last day, November 1, 2024, we saw more than 20 bears, though most were from a distance, so binoculars are advisable. Overall, it was a memorable trip. However, there were a couple of points for improvement. We encountered the northern lights on our first night and were fortunate to see them at our hotel, but we weren’t informed that our guide would have woken us for an off-site viewing. Additionally, I was eager to see the Halloween festivities and trick-or-treating on that date but missed out as no one notified us when it began. Despite these issues, we had a wonderful experience filled with lasting memories.
I spent five nights at the Twelve Hotel from December 7th to 12th, 2024, having visited since 2006, witnessing its evolution. The multilingual staff is friendly and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Security is a priority with armored doors, surveillance cameras, and in-room safes for valuables. The beds are incredibly comfortable and the room decor is tasteful. Daily cleaning is thorough, and the hearty breakfast was included in my booking. The hotel boasts excellent public transport links, and affordable restaurants are nearby. I have only positive feedback about this family-run hotel that I have cherished for 19 years, including its lovely summer patio. Kudos to the management for the renovations that enhance the guest experience. It's a great value for money, although not the cheapest option. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends. Thérèse.
I participated in the "Tundra Buggy Lodge: Town & Polar Bears" tour, which included a three-night stay at the Tundra Buggy Lodge and one night in a Churchill hotel to experience both the town and polar bears. Our journey began and ended with convenient overnight stays at an airport hotel in Winnipeg, facilitating our charter flights to and from Churchill. Upon arrival in Churchill, we toured the town, visiting the unique Polar Bear Holding Facility, which houses troublesome bears before relocating them. We also saw the wreck of the Miss Piggy and the town's Inukshuk. I particularly enjoyed the Itsanitaq Museum's display of Inuit art from ancient times. At the Parks Canada Visitor Centre, a ranger gave a fascinating talk about the local ecosystem, followed by a presentation on the indigenous Dene people at the Town Complex. After the presentations, we departed for the Tundra Buggy Lodge, which took about 90 minutes. Our driver, Buggy Bob, kindly took a detour to show us a mother bear with her twin cubs, and the views from the tundra buggy's outdoor platform were breathtaking. The lodge is conveniently located near bear habitats and features two sleeping cars with 20 bunks each, a lounge and Dan's Diner. After the safety briefing, we headed to dinner. That evening, we were treated to a spectacular display of the Aurora Borealis, and we even had a curious bear visit us at night. During our excursions on the Tundra Buggy, we spotted a variety of wildlife, including eight polar bears and many bird species. Our group had just five members, and I found our guide Ward to be excellent. One afternoon, a polar bear even checked out the Tundra Buggy Lodge, followed by a discussion on polar bears and a lovely dinner prepared by the staff. On our last day, we were delayed by a bear visitor before heading out for one last photo at the Tundra Buggy Base. We then took a bus into town, where we spent our final night in a central hotel. At dinner, stunning Arctic wildlife photos played on a large screen at the restaurant. The next day, we had breakfast there, with our server sharing a video of a bear that wandered through town at midnight, though I slept right through it. We spent a free morning exploring the shops before heading to Wapusk Adventures for dog sledding in the afternoon. After this thrilling experience, we traveled to the airport for our return flight to Winnipeg. Our chartered plane was quite spacious, accommodating just six of us and a few others. Upon our arrival, we were driven to our hotel, where our group shared drinks and snacks before parting ways the next day. This tour was truly unforgettable, and I cherished every moment of the experience.
We participated in the classic polar bear experience in the last week of October 2025. Choosing the in-town option instead of the Tundra Lodge was ideal for us due to the private bathrooms and sleeping areas it offered. It worked well to have a day between our Tundra Buggy experiences, allowing us to enjoy other activities without feeling rushed. The cultural presentations and dining experiences were impressive, giving us genuine insight into the culture and history of the Swampy Cree and Sayisi Dene peoples as well as the town of Churchill. While the accommodations at the Aurora Inn are basic and not upscale, they were clean, quiet, and spacious. Our guide Alex truly stood out, prioritizing the group's needs. On Halloween, despite the Blue Jays being in the World Series, he ensured everyone got to see the Northern Lights and take photos, even missing the end of the game himself—a testament to his outstanding customer service. Regarding the polar bears, Alex offered a wealth of knowledge, and our drivers spotted over 20 bears during our two days of Tundra Buggying, including a mother with cubs and sparring adolescents. It was an unforgettable experience. One suggestion for Frontiers North would be to balance the age groups in the tours better, as we would have preferred a few more younger participants. Thank you for an exceptional experience with fantastic staff and impeccable service.
Our long-awaited dream of visiting Churchill and seeing polar bears in their natural environment was truly extraordinary. Every aspect of the trip was fantastic. The organization was impeccable, and our guide, Alex, greatly enhanced the experience with his detailed insights on both environmental and cultural topics. His professionalism and focus on customer needs helped bring our group together, making the journey even more enjoyable. Although my husband and I typically travel independently and manage our own itineraries, we had a wonderful time and strongly recommend this agency for an exceptional adventure to find the Arctic king.
