Three hours by bus — see Borgund Stave Church, picturesque Lærdal, and the Stegastein viewpoint over Sognefjorden.
This guided bus tour begins in Flåm, taking you through Norway’s longest road tunnel on E16 into the stunning Lærdal valley. Your first stop is the remarkable Borgund Stave Church, where you can explore the exterior and capture some photos. Next, there's a rest stop in the quaint village of Lærda, offering views of Sognefjorden.
The journey continues along scenic mountain roads, culminating at the breathtaking Stegastein viewpoint, which provides panoramic views of Sognefjorden's converging arms. After soaking in the sights, the tour concludes back in Flåm, after a final scenic drive along the Aurlandsfjorden. A good camera is recommended for the views.

The excursion was brief but definitely worthwhile. Our tour leader provided great information, and the bus was comfortable. We had a really enjoyable experience.
This business was the most unprofessional and incompetent I have ever encountered. They shouldn't be contracted by any reputable company. The excursion was scheduled for 12:30, yet we were instructed to arrive by 11:40. We reached at 11:30 but were left waiting on the bus for an hour without updates, only departing at the scheduled time. Soon after, we had to turn back to pick up additional late arrivals, which was dictated by the supervisor. Upon reaching an inspection area, we learned we needed a different bus. The staff spent 30 minutes searching for the necessary paperwork, with one document found tucked in a seat. Ultimately, they discovered the files in an overhead compartment, but the bus still wasn't safe to drive due to multiple issues. Stranded with no transportation options, some of us attempted to ask local businesses for help to no avail. Eventually, after waiting for an hour, a van arrived to shuttle us back to our ship in groups. This company has only been operating for a month, and both the driver and guide appeared overwhelmed. We didn't see any sights and feel our day was completely wasted. While we are getting a refund, it doesn’t compensate for the beautiful experiences we missed.
The guide, a knowledgeable woman from Patagonia, shared great insights on history and culture. Driving through the world's longest vehicle tunnel was thrilling and highlighted the challenges of mountain living. However, I was disappointed that we couldn't access the grounds of the Stave Church or the church itself. The scenic stops felt rushed, likely due to the heavy tourist traffic on the narrow roads, which made it necessary to return to the ship on time. I recommend taking an earlier trip than the 1 p.m. one to avoid this issue. Experiencing the snow line and the clear snow-melt ponds was refreshing. This was my fourth time in Norway, and I'm already planning my next visit.
Experiencing the fjords from a unique viewpoint was fantastic. The snow and water at the summit of Stegastein, along with the stunning overlook, made it a remarkable trip. The guides were excellent.
I was charged for four tickets as requested, but when we arrived at the bus, they said I had only three due to a claimed cancellation. The bus was full, and the operator was rude, insisting I leave the bus. I had no backup plans for my day in Norway. I will not use this service again.
The guide was excellent, demonstrating a deep knowledge of every detail of the trip and sharing numerous fascinating facts. She was delightful as well. The stops allowed just the right amount of time for a quick look, a leg stretch, and photos without feeling like we were waiting too long to continue.
The pick-up was somewhat late and there was confusion regarding which bus we should board. Fortunately, other tour groups assisted us. Once we were on our way, we were pleased with our tour guide, who was new but performed admirably. We did encounter some bus problems, including a fluid leak discovered during a routine traffic check, which caused a delay, though it didn't bother us much. One thing to note is that we expected to enter the Borglund Stave church rather than just walk around it; clearer communication about that would have been helpful. Overall, we found the experience enjoyable.
Avoid this tour. The bus was late to arrive. At the first stop, we could only view the stave church briefly from outside a fenced area. Then, we were held up at an inspection station for over 45 minutes due to a leak, which disrupted the trip. We had to take a cab back to Flam to catch our transportation to Bergen. The operator only offered a partial refund, claiming we experienced the first half of the tour.
Even though it was a rainy day, I found every stop to be enjoyable and the views along the way were stunning. The journey through the mountains provided a special perspective of the dramatic scenery above the treeline, including sheep roaming freely. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and very helpful. I would definitely suggest this tour to anyone wanting a high-altitude view of the fjord and the nearby countryside.
This tour exceeded my expectations. It was far more scenic than I anticipated. Though there was a considerable amount of time spent on the bus, we visited many wonderful places. This is an ideal excursion for a cruise stop. I only wished we had more time at the stave church, but I understand the drive constraints. I would definitely do this again.
