Having spent most of my life in California and visiting numerous wineries, I can confidently say that this tour with Fred (also known as Don Federico) and Maria Jose was one of the best experiences I've had. The tour was thoughtfully organized, featuring a comfortable car and stops at two charming villages, vineyards, and a winery. Fred shared a wealth of information about the history of the region and the Sierra de Francia grapes. Maria Jose picked an excellent restaurant with delicious local cuisine. I look forward to taking another tour with them during my next visit to Salamanca.
Don Federico and Maria Jose arranged a fantastic journey into the Sierra de Salamanca wine region, followed by a city tour of Salamanca and an evening at a castle just outside the city. The entire trip was exceptionally well-organized, and the stunning Sierra de Salamanca was a hidden gem we would not have discovered ourselves. The wines were incredible, and the winemakers truly passionate about their craft. Our enthusiasm has even prompted relatives to request a similar tour. Throughout our two days, Don Federico was a delightful, knowledgeable, and thoughtful host, providing great recommendations for bars and restaurants in Madrid. I do have one suggestion: it would be helpful for American visitors if credit cards were accepted. Wiring money was somewhat cumbersome for us. Additionally, since our credit card includes travel insurance, we typically don't purchase separate coverage, but we would have happily paid a bit more for that option. Aside from that, we thoroughly enjoyed this experience.
Our day with Don Federico was truly unforgettable, filled with wine tasting, camaraderie, delicious food, and visits to ancient villages. The remote terraced vineyards we explored were a lovely surprise, only accessible by walking winding paths, showcasing 100-year-old vines that date back to Roman times. At boutique wineries, we felt like honored guests as we enjoyed generous tastings of both white and red wines, paired with jamón and chorizo. We engaged in insightful discussions about the wines, learning to identify the unique aromas and flavors from the vineyard's granite, fruit, and floral notes. Lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant featured an array of exceptional local roasted meats and unlimited servings of the wines we had just discovered. Don Federico, a naturally gracious host, combined his warmth and passion for Castile and Leon with extensive knowledge of wine varietals and winemaking processes, all delivered with Scottish wit and charm in multiple languages. We are eager to return and explore more of Spain with him.
The experience with Don Federico was truly exceptional. His charm and extensive knowledge, accumulated over a decade, made the tour feel more like an immersive adventure. We explored stunning and rarely seen villages in the Sierra de Salamanca, appreciating the architecture and old streets while learning about local history. Interacting with vineyard growers showcased their ancient cultivation methods adapted to dry climates. The wine tasting included unique varietals we hadn't encountered before, and the midday meal was the best we had in Spain, complemented by breathtaking valley views. All costs were covered in the tour price. We plan to return next year with friends for a multi-day journey to explore different regions. This customized experience with the passionate and entertaining Don Federico was outstanding.
During my three-week Spanish course in Salamanca, I learned the phrase "Go with the flow," which perfectly describes this wonderful wine tasting experience. Fred and Maria guided my friends and me through an intimate and authentic wine tasting. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, we felt incredibly fortunate to participate in a tour rich in the history of Salamanca wines, allowing us to truly appreciate their finesse. The small production winery we visited was charming, as every grape is hand-picked and made with love. Fred's enthusiasm and expertise shone throughout the tour, capturing moments for us and sharing insights, while Maria provided an outstanding lunch in a picturesque village that left us entirely satisfied. Even with the rain, the medieval villages were beautiful, and the weather added a touch of romance to the experience. This tour offers authenticity that is hard to find elsewhere. Although we can't control the weather, our enjoyment of the tour remained unaffected. Thank you, Fred and Maria, for this extraordinary experience! I can’t emphasize enough how kind and considerate Fred and Maria are. While I still cherish the memories from our wine tour, I was pleasantly surprised to find amazing photos of our happy faces in my email. These shots beautifully captured the joy of the day. Thank you both!
We have just come back to Ireland after an amazing few days with Don Federico and his lovely partner Maria Jose. They guided us through some charming boutique wineries near Salamanca.
This trip was truly incredible. Fred possesses an extensive knowledge of the region and the different wine varietals. He customized the experience to meet our needs and went out of his way to ensure we had a great time. There are so many positives to mention. We will definitely recommend this experience to everyone.
The tour was exceptionally organized from the start. Frederico was available for a private day tour, picking us up from our hotel in Salamanca and taking us to various locations in the countryside. It was ideal for us. Frederico was passionate and knowledgeable about wine, history, and culture, which he shared with enthusiasm. We toured two vineyards, enjoyed some impressive wines, and had a fantastic experience overall. We would highly recommend this.
Fred and Jose Maria are outstanding! From the start, Jose Maria organized a fantastic trip and consistently communicated while we planned our activities. She was determined to create a memorable experience for us. Having been on numerous wine tours worldwide, I can confidently say that Fred is the best host I've encountered. He combines courtesy and kindness with humor and high energy. Fred possesses extensive knowledge of Spanish history and wine. Sierra de Francia offers a remarkable experience where time seems to stand still. The wines are distinct and delicious! We visited Cambrico, where Buli, the local winemaker, guided us through his vineyard, showcasing 120-year-old vines, and we even tasted the grapes directly from the Bodegas. After that, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Vinos LaZorra's restaurant, "Milasierra," followed by a personal tasting with Augustin, the owner. Fred's patience in answering all our countless questions was impressive, and it's clear he genuinely cares about his guests. I wholeheartedly recommend Fred and Jose Maria and their company "La Rutas de Federico" to anyone seeking an exceptional cultural and wine adventure. When Fred dropped us at our hotel, it felt like saying goodbye to a brother. I hope to see them again!
This has been one of the most distinctive and thrilling experiences I've had. The personal touch and accommodating nature were exceptional. I gained a deep understanding of the region and its wines, including many details often overlooked in other tours. As Don Federico emphasizes, this is not just a tour—it's a true experience.
