The La Ruta de Don Frederico experience is an incredible introduction to young winemakers, century-old vines, castle hotels, family bodegas, and local culinary delights. Frederick and Maria Jose cater to your personal preferences, including dietary restrictions, interest in Castille-Leon, and language skills, while being remarkably punctual and engaged. After spending two weeks in Portugal, Frederick conveniently picked us up at Madrid airport and tailored our Segovia tour. We focused on the regional wines, beginning with a local restaurant sampling four varieties. Frederick possesses extensive knowledge of Segovia's architecture, history, cuisine, and local culture. We were also welcomed by the owner of a beautiful 15th-century hotel in Topas, where we enjoyed an extraordinary room, a solo tour of a Renaissance palace, scenic grounds, and a wine tasting featuring seven local wineries paired with a four-course dinner. The next day led us to Fariza, Mamoles, Formariz, Fermoselle, and Villar del Buey, where we met skilled winemakers and chefs rooted in the area for generations. Throughout our journey, Frederick documented our experiences through videos and photos. Our third day included a thorough exploration of Salamanca, which was far more enriching than a typical bus tour. We connected with locals while sampling food and drink, and we bought wines that aren’t available in the U.S.; Frederick is assisting us in finding a distributor for some extraordinary Spanish wines. The accommodations and unique visits were delightful. We concluded the trip with detailed recommendations from Frederick for our final day in Madrid, including a stay in a quaint apartment/hotel and suggestions for traditional and offbeat eateries. He provided an extensive guide for our Madrid leg, and if we had a whole week there, his insights would have been invaluable. Frederick, a former corporate executive with a zest for life, would certainly be a friend if he lived near us. Maria is delightful and a pleasure to be around. We appreciated meeting the innovative locals in Castille-Leon and plan to return for a more extensive tour with friends in the near future.
Embrace spontaneity! During my three-week Spanish course in Salamanca, I learned this phrase, which perfectly captures the essence of an incredible wine tasting experience. I’m grateful to Fred and Maria for taking my friends and me to an intimate and authentic winery experience. Although the weather could have been better, we felt fortunate to partake in the tour, which offered extensive insights into Salamanca wines—a crucial aspect for truly appreciating their nuances. Visiting a small production winery, where every grape is hand-picked with care, was a remarkable experience. Both guides were attentive and knowledgeable; Fred brought energy and enthusiasm, capturing our moments and explaining everything. Maria prepared an outstanding lunch in a beautiful village that left me incredibly satisfied. Even with the rain, the medieval villages we explored retained their charm, enhanced by the romantic atmosphere. This tour provides an authentic experience that is hard to find elsewhere. We may not be able to control the weather, but our joy from the tour far outweighed any rain. Thank you, Fred and Maria, for an unforgettable experience!
Federico is a true gentleman and an expert in wine, history, and the region. He shared fascinating stories and insights with our group. We visited exceptional "off the beaten path" wineries, meeting their owners and discovering their passion for winemaking. A memorable lunch featuring local specialties at a Michelin-starred restaurant added to the experience. We explored a charming town, engaged with locals, and tasted wine from a bodega run by a nonagenarian. There were photo opportunities at every turn. This day will be a cherished highlight in our lives.
During our inaugural visit to Spain, we wanted to experience a wine tour and found Don Federico on Tripadvisor. This tour was an excellent way to maximize our day. I believe we were his first group since the pandemic began. We visited several wineries, tasting wines right among the vines and exploring the underground bodegas. Additionally, we enjoyed a fantastic lunch with several delicious courses. Despite the heat, our guide was accommodating, arranging impromptu stops for drinks or to cool off in a church. The day was filled with enjoyable conversations and memorable moments. Our hotel pickup and drop-off made it convenient and stress-free. We highly recommend this tour to anyone eager to spend a day focused on wine.
This wine tasting experience was truly exceptional, offering the chance to savor fine wines alongside delicious food. Frederick possessed a wealth of knowledge about both the wines and the historical context of the locations we explored in Spain. He personally introduced us to the winemakers, allowing us to connect with remarkable individuals who had fascinating stories to share. This tour elevates wine tasting to a whole new level, providing a genuine educational experience that I would strongly recommend.
Don Federico's small group tour offers an exceptional glimpse into authentic Spain, allowing you to visit family-owned bodegas while enjoying first-class transportation. He served as a fantastic host with extensive local insights. The visit to a family bodega, coupled with an educational wine tasting, was both engaging and delightful. The outstanding regional cuisine served at lunch further enhanced our experience. Observing the grape harvest in the vineyard added a memorable touch to the day. Many thanks, Robert and Maureen. We are eager to return for another wine tour.
Having visited Salamanca for the second time, we once again enjoyed the delightful wine tasting experience with La ruta Don Federico. Our previous trip was so memorable that we suggested it to friends seeking an authentic slice of Spain, and they too were thrilled with the experience. Fred goes above and beyond to ensure a memorable outing, showcasing his extensive knowledge of local wineries and the surrounding area. Salamanca is a beautiful city with much to explore despite its small size. We savored some exceptional wines alongside delicious tapas, and our friends were so impressed that they are already planning another visit. We wholeheartedly recommend La Ruta Don Federico for outstanding personal and friendly service.
