The experience was terrible, starting with the filthy van and an uninformative guide. After arriving at what seemed like a parking lot of dirty vehicles, we felt anxious about where we were. We passed through a town that was clearly impoverished and rundown, with boarded buildings and visible poverty. There were only a few people and vehicles, which heightened our unease, especially seeing men with rifles. At one guide's fenced property, we found ourselves inside a grim place with a dead animal's head on the ground and neglected animals nearby. The ATV tour led us through dirt roads with nothing to see until we reached the so-called "Ghost Town," which only had three graffiti-covered buildings and no true ghost town ambiance. The beach club felt like a rip-off, with the guide pushing overpriced food and drinks while we just wanted to clean ourselves after the dusty ride. The return trip also came with a demand for $10 per person. Overall, for $468, we felt completely misled and disappointed. Progreso was not at all like the promotional images, and I urge others to be cautious about this excursion.
If I could give this a zero rating, I would. Slicer Beach Club is quite small and not very pleasant. The pool is as tiny as a hot tub and dirty. Surprisingly, Slicer was the highlight of the tour. The female guide in the van continuously criticized Americans for being wealthy while her people struggle. It was confusing whether she disliked us or just wanted our money. The long drive led us to a secluded “farm” where we switched to another guide for the ATV ride, while the first guide left to lead another tour. I ended up alone with my young grandson and an unfamiliar man in a remote area of Yucatan, away from anyone else. On the ATVs, we ventured further into the wilderness, and panic set in as I thought about kidnapping stories I’ve heard. It was dusty, hot, and desolate, far from the ship. We finally reached a "ghost town" where the guide had us climb a wall, leaving me nervous as he stayed outside. The area was filled with graffiti, dilapidated buildings, and unkempt nature. While exploring, we encountered another man armed and stationed in a treehouse. I was terrified but managed to engage him, only to receive a cold glare. We quickly left as our guide and the armed man exchanged tense words that I couldn’t understand, and we were rushed off the property. On the way back, we passed a sewage plant that smelled terrible and a lagoon for swimming, which we declined. I just wanted to return to the ship; this experience was overwhelming. Back at the farm, the animals looked neglected, and the conditions were disheartening. After a 45-60 minute wait, the original guide returned with her group, all looking as unhappy as us. There were no refreshments, no restrooms, and the whole ordeal felt like a nightmare I had paid for. Even my grandson, who loves ATVs, disliked this trip. We made it back to the ship on time, which is the only positive I can mention. For anyone’s sake, avoid this tour. (We took this in May 2019.)
The experience did not live up to expectations. While it wasn't a complete failure, I was quite disappointed. The beach club persistently pushed for us to purchase the all-inclusive deal for every guest, even after we expressed our intention to pay per item. We ended up paying $28 for three sodas and two chips with salsa.
This excursion was truly the best way to step out of your comfort zone. They pick you up near the ship and take you into town to meet the local guide before heading to a rustic barn, about a 20-minute ride away. Although the place shows signs of age, with animals around and some well-worn ATVs, it has a unique charm. They provided gear and instructions; we were lucky enough to experience a rainy day, which resulted in lots of mud and fun. We visited an abandoned church and learned about the history of this hidden town. I appreciated that the experience wasn't overly structured or polished, offering a glimpse into how people live daily. Afterward, we went to a beach club, so take a change of clothes—you'll definitely need them. After some relaxation at the beach, we returned to the boat with the group. Overall, it was an unexpected experience that was absolutely worth it. Five stars.
Our trip has left us with wonderful memories. It was an energetic experience! The guide is knowledgeable about the area's history and shares fascinating legends. We are eagerly anticipating our return.
This tour was fantastic! If you enjoy adventure and getting muddy while navigating through wild pools, followed by an open cenote, this is for you. The guide shares insights about the flora, fauna, and local legends. Thank you, Cristobal, for your outstanding service! We look forward to returning soon.
