I spent a few days in Johannesburg and chose to take a tour to learn more about South Africa and diamond mining. I was fortunate to have Marvin as my private guide; he was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing South African culture. Marvin tailored the tour to fit the starting times of activities and my personal interests. At the Voortrekker Monument, I gained insights into the history of the late 1800s and early 1900s, which I previously knew little about aside from the name "Kruger." I also discovered a remarkable art gallery on one of the lower levels, featuring some works for sale. I enjoyed exploring the Kruger residence, which offered detailed information about his life and his presidency of the South African republic. As an engineer, the highlight of my day was the diamond mine tour. I had another guide, possibly named Sharon, who explained the geology of diamond formation and the recovery techniques used. The tour included outdoor walking and observing the operation of the lifts and conveyors.
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The sites and scenery were fascinating, particularly in Pretoria. Our guide Marvin was not only friendly and knowledgeable but also consistently courteous and attentive. He patiently answered all our questions, and we would rate his service an 11 out of 10. We started at the mine, viewing replicas of famous diamonds and learning about the extraction process. Following that, we had a brief visit to Pretoria, stopping at the war memorial, the Paul Krueger house, and the president's office. My only disappointment was the lack of time for lunch, which left us hungry by the tour's conclusion. Overall, though, it was all quite good and engaging.
