Union Buildings — places to visit in Pretoria
Union Buildings in Pretoria — view 2
The Union Buildings are the official seat of the South African government, a grand architectural statement completed in 1913 and designed by Sir Herbert Baker in a classical style. Set in the Pretoria Botanical Gardens, they consist of a central sandstone structure flanked by two wings, with expansive lawns offering a panoramic view of the city. Visiting the Union Buildings allows you to explore the terraced gardens and soak in the historical significance of South Africa's political landscape. It’s best experienced in the cooler mornings and late afternoons, when locals often gather to enjoy the vistas. Nearby attractions include the Voortrekker Monument and the charming streets of Hatfield.

Four hours exploring Pretoria, engaging with locals and seeing the essence of South Africa's capital city.

Our sincere thanks to Ben for the fantastic tour. He picked us up from our hotel and guided us through a fascinating journey from the historic to the contemporary aspects of Pretoria. We gained a wealth of knowledge about the region and South Africa more broadly. Highlights included the Voortrekker Monument and its grounds, the Kruger House Museum, and the Union Buildings, home to the impressive statue of Mandela. A memorable moment occurred at the statue when I encountered several elementary students; one girl was surprised to learn I was 70 and exclaimed, “Wow! You're old!” We also drove past Church Square and the beautiful Palace of Justice, though the area has its safety concerns. We wholeheartedly recommend this tour; it was truly worthwhile.travelhopes on the Half-day tour of Pretoria's highlights tour
