Reviews
The tour was excellently organized from beginning to end, with everything running smoothly. The gear provided, including rubber boots, helmets, and headlamps, was of high quality. It's advisable not to wear too many layers, as it remains comfortable in the cleats; asking the guide for advice on this is helpful. Our guide, “Sun,” offered thorough explanations about the historical and current working conditions in the mountain. We explored various tunnels, which created a fittingly intense atmosphere for the experience. One area for improvement could be the market visit; providing more insight into specific items available for purchase, like offerings for Pachamama, would enhance the experience.
I had an excellent tour of the renowned silver mines in Potosi. We began by visiting the miners market to purchase gifts for the miners. Then, we enjoyed a wonderful viewpoint before spending 2.5 hours inside the mines. It was a fantastic experience.
Exploring the mine provides a deep understanding of colonization's history, current life, and the future uncertainties of this ancient practice. With over 500 entries and 30,000 workers, including 10,000 women, the blend of beliefs and traditions showcases the power of hard work through multiple underground tunnels. It's truly an anthropological experience. Our guide, Sol, a former miner, was exceptional in sharing his knowledge, greatly enhancing the unforgettable experience.
The local guide Sol was outstanding, having worked for two years within the mine. However, the gifts for workers and food were not provided, contrary to what was mentioned in the advertisement. It's important to bring extra cash (Bolivian pesos) for these expenses.
The visit profoundly deepened my understanding of those who have faith in God.
We arranged a private tour that was advertised as lasting three hours but only lasted 1.5 hours. Upon arrival at the pickup location, there was no greeting, introduction, or explanation; we were just hurried to grab our gear. Based on what we saw on TripAdvisor, we anticipated a more extended and informative experience. After quickly picking up our equipment, we spent two minutes at a market, which had most stalls closed in the afternoon. The tour through the mine felt rushed, with limited information provided by our guide, Sol, and only when we asked. On the return journey, Sol even exited the car before the drop-off to assist a friend. I reached out to the organizer about these issues but received no response, indicating a lack of concern for customers. Overall, while visiting the silver mines was an amazing experience, we appreciated being just the two of us due to the operational nature of the mines, requiring caution with passing carts. We also liked that Sol showed respect for the mine workers.
The tour was exceptional, covering all aspects of the mine. Our guide, Soledad (Sol), was outstanding.
Visiting the silver mines of Potosí was an unforgettable and enlightening experience. The tour was incredibly powerful and emotional, largely due to our fantastic guide, Sol. Sol was patient, insightful, and knowledgeable throughout. We were picked up and dropped off on schedule and received protective gear for the mine. She also took us to a local market beforehand, allowing us to purchase gifts for the miners, such as tobacco, alcohol, and dynamite, which genuinely assist them in their work. Inside the mines, Sol guided us safely, stopping at various points to explain mining processes, the miners' daily realities, and the historical significance of Potosí's silver industry. Her insights into Bolivia's colonial past, trade routes, and the significant economic impact of these mines were both captivating and deeply touching. Experiencing this first-hand was surreal, and Sol ensured it remained both educational and respectful of the workers there. This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will always cherish. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Sol and the tour team — I highly recommend this tour.
The tour was quite intense. Those who are even slightly claustrophobic might encounter some challenges. It was very informative and engaging. You navigate through active mine tunnels and need to be alert for passing mine carts, with sections offering very little space. During our experience, we climbed ladders and maneuvered through rock chutes. This is all manageable for those who are comfortable with such activities. As someone with a bit of claustrophobia, I felt uneasy and slightly frightened. The dust in the air and the high elevation of over 13,000 feet made it a bit tough. I focused on deep breathing throughout. Nevertheless, completing the tour provided insight into the challenges miners face. I’m glad I participated, but I wouldn't consider doing it again. The guide was excellent.
This tour offers an excellent opportunity to discover the silver mines. Our guide was personable and dedicated time to show us various areas of the mines while sharing their history. We even had the chance to meet some miners and give them gifts. The mines can be dark, and we encountered ankle-deep water in certain spots, but we were provided with appropriate clothing, so my own clothes remained clean. Those who are claustrophobic may struggle during the 1.5-hour visit. However, I would suggest this tour to anyone traveling to Potosi.
