Three hours by boat — wildlife spotting along Monkey River, swimming opportunities, native lunch at Monkey River Village, and manatee watching on the return to Placencia.
This three-hour boat tour departs from Placencia and takes you along the serene waters of the Caribbean Sea and into the natural mangroves at the mouth of Monkey River. As you travel, keep an eye out for Belize's diverse wildlife, including various birds, iguanas, snakes, crocodiles, and the loud howler monkeys that give the tour its name.
A highlight includes the chance to swim in the river, providing an invigorating experience. Afterward, enjoy a native lunch in the quaint Monkey River Village before heading back. On the return trip, the boat will make a stop for manatee watching, giving you an opportunity to spot these gentle creatures before they dive beneath the surface.

Captain Jak's is definitely worth considering. My family had an outstanding experience on the Monkey River and Manatee Watch tour. Our guide and his son were excellent hosts for our group of nine. The combination of a brief hike, boat ride, and fantastic lunch kept the younger kids engaged while being manageable for the older ones. The wildlife observations were remarkable—we saw crocodiles, howler monkeys, stunning birds, a mother manatee with her pup, and so much more. I highly recommend this tour.
Our group had a fantastic experience on the trip. We spotted monkeys, crocodiles, and manatees. Our guides, Doyle and Doyle Jr., were excellent and ensured we saw all the animals, especially the manatees, which were our top priority. Visiting Monkey River Village was memorable, allowing for some souvenir shopping and a delightful local lunch. Just a heads up, there were quite a few bugs, so be prepared.
While we spotted several birds and a few iguanas, the overall experience was disappointing compared to the reviews I had read. Due to the cloudy weather, our sightings were limited: we only saw a few distant crocodiles, no toucans, and the howler monkeys were completely silent. The manatees appeared for just a moment before vanishing. It felt like we missed a lot of the wildlife that is supposed to make this tour remarkable. On a positive note, the food served was quite good, and our guide Doyle was exceptional—humorous, attentive, and knowledgeable, which made our day more pleasant despite the lack of animal activity. Ultimately, the trip did not fully meet my expectations.
This adventure in Belize is a must! Guides Doyle and Jr. shared a wealth of knowledge about everything from birds and plants to insects and monkeys. Experiencing monkeys in their natural environment is something you can't afford to miss.
It was a wonderful experience. The guides were excellent.
The guides were extremely helpful and provided a lot of information. I had a fantastic time, thank you for the experience.
Our half-day excursion to Monkey River was fantastic. Our guide, Doyle, was exceptional, pointing out various wildlife and sharing insightful information about the region. The stewed chicken for lunch at Monkey Creek was delicious as well.
Doyle, our guide, was both enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We encountered a variety of wildlife and plants, with the massive bamboo stands being my favorite. One guest even saw a tarantula. I highly recommend this tour.
The tour was quite disappointing for me. I usually have much closer animal encounters in places like Costa Rica, so this felt somewhat like a waste of time. If you're not familiar with wildlife or jungle experiences, you might enjoy it more. The guides were decent but not exceptional. Additionally, we returned almost an hour later than expected, which caused me to miss part of my scheduled fishing charter.
The tour with Percy was wonderful. We loved exploring the village and interacting with the locals. The lunch provided was fantastic as well. We encountered monkeys, alligators, various birds, and trees.
