Full day on foot — choose from three trails of varying lengths in the Marlborough Sounds, round-trip boat transport included.
Experience the striking landscapes of the Marlborough Sounds on a self-guided walk along the Queen Charlotte Track. You can choose from three different hiking routes that cover varied distances and challenges, with highlights possibly including Ship Cove, Endeavor Inlet, or Torea Bay. The round-trip boat service transports you directly to the starting point of your chosen trail and picks you up at the end.
The boat has set departure and return times, meaning you won't be back in Picton until between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM. If you're arriving via a cruise ship, it's essential to inform your provider, as the boat schedule may not align with your ship's departure.

The day was beautiful, exhilarating, and incredibly rewarding. The staff on the Beachcomber Cruise provided outstanding service and informative commentary while we were on the boat. The journey to the trailhead allowed us to appreciate the stunning beauty of Marlborough Sound. Throughout the ride, staff members were available for any questions. The trail itself is well-marked, and the numerous peekaboo views of the sound during the hike are truly breathtaking. Ending the day with a beer at Furneaux Lodge was fantastic, and we had ample time to relax and enjoy the surroundings before heading back to Picton. I highly recommend this day trip to any reasonably fit hikers visiting Picton.
We used Beachcomber as a water taxi to Ship Cove and back from Furneaux Lodge, and the entire experience was excellent. From the friendly booking staff to the return trip in Picton, everything went smoothly. There were clear instructions for boarding, and the ride included continuous commentary about various wildlife sightings, such as seals and blue penguins. They were punctual for both legs of the journey. While I can't attribute the scenery along the track to them, it was truly stunning.
The weather was perfect during our day hike from Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove, making the experience truly wonderful. The cruise to and from was enjoyable, and Ian provided engaging commentary. I highly recommend this trip.
I traveled on the ferry from Picton to Ship's Cove, stopping at Motuara Island to view the wildlife. Although I only had an hour at the sanctuary before catching the next boat, it was definitely worthwhile for the variety of birds and the historical context. I highly recommend this experience to independent hikers on the QCT. The luggage transfers were smooth; my suitcase was delivered to my room each day, so I never had to worry about carrying it. Excellent service!
The check-in process at the wharf was seamless, and the staff were very accommodating. Although the water in the sound was quite rough on the way to the track, the captain navigated it expertly and ensured our safety. The walk itself was stunning, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. Overall, it was a fantastic day.
The hike was stunning, and we were relieved we only tackled the stretch from Furneux Lodge to Punga Cove, as 8 miles felt like a perfect distance to enjoy the scenery. It was a dry day; otherwise, the trek could have been tough without proper footwear and hiking poles, which we didn't have. My husband, 72, bikes 8-10 miles nearly every day, while I run 10 miles weekly along with daily fitness routines. We both felt accomplished once we finished, but there was ample time to complete the hike. Afterward, we enjoyed a drink at the restaurant while waiting for our boat return. The captain even had a group of dolphins swimming around the boat.
The boat journey from Furneaux Lodge to Ship Cove was fantastic. Hiking the Queen Charlotte Track offered stunning views and opportunities to see wildlife, making it well worth the trip.
The one-day trek offered stunning views of the pristine forests and hills of the South Island. Although the 17 km hike turned out to be more difficult than we expected, we completed it in 4.5 hours. The trail had some uneven and rocky sections, but reaching the end felt like a significant achievement.
This hike is quite enjoyable and features relatively easy terrain. We completed the trek from Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge in a little over 4 hours, even though it’s estimated to take 5.5 hours. Finishing ahead of schedule allowed us to relax at the beautiful Furneaux Lodge, enjoying a beer in the sunny garden while we awaited the return boat. The area is rich in history, so it was disappointing that we didn’t receive any commentary, despite what was mentioned in the description. However, the boat service was very efficient, and I would recommend this experience.
My friends had previously explored parts of the Queen Charlotte Track, so we were curious to experience it ourselves. We opted for the route from Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove and took the 9am ferry. The pleasant weather made for a beautiful journey with stunning views. Upon arriving at Furneaux Lodge, the trail was well signposted, and we encountered very few hikers heading our way, making for a serene atmosphere. The track was generally manageable, with some inclines and a few landslide areas, but nothing particularly challenging. While several coastal vistas were lovely, much of the hike traverses through wooded sections. Overall, it was a fairly easy four-hour trek, allowing for breaks and photo opportunities, resulting in a pleasant experience. Though not breathtaking, the day concluded nicely with refreshments at Punga Cove before our boat ride back to Picton. It was an enjoyable outing, and I’m glad we participated.
