Our half-day guided kayak tour with Hannah was truly fantastic. Everything about the trip was enjoyable, from the kayaks and stunning scenery to the homemade slice for morning tea. Hannah was incredibly friendly and engaging, sharing great stories about the area we were paddling through.
We had an amazing experience. As newcomers to paddling, we were promptly taught the basics and enjoyed four hours of serene paddling in a beautiful setting.
Hannah is an excellent guide who ensures safety while sharing insights about the captivating sea and land life. Our four-hour excursion went smoothly from beginning to end. It was enjoyable to kayak one way and then get picked up by a van for the ride back to Picton along the mountain road. The sunny weather enhanced our experience. I highly recommend this trip.
We had an outstanding experience, thanks to a very considerate team. My son and I truly enjoyed our time, and we were particularly grateful for Rachel, our guide, who was genuine and thoughtful.
An excellent experience. The organization was top-notch, and our guide for the day was superb. Although the weather wasn't great, it didn't hinder our enjoyment of the paddle.
The tour was extremely well organized. Our kayak guide, Hannah, was delightful and showed us various rays, birds, and plant life. We paused on a beach for oat bars and enjoyed tea and French press coffee. We explored much of the sound before being taken to begin the last 12 km of the Queen Charlotte Track. My husband opted for the mountain bike option, and they provided his bike and our lunches via water taxi, also giving us tickets for the return to Picton.
It was a lovely day on the water, but the tour lacked excitement. After paddling for about 15 minutes, we ended up waiting over 20 minutes for a freighter to pass, which cut our time in other bays short. Our guide, Grant, often focused on the guest in his kayak instead of engaging with the entire group. In fact, she was able to identify some birds that he didn’t know. He mentioned we might paddle under an archway but didn’t know where it was located, even after checking his phone, so we missed that opportunity. Although he spoke about seeing many starfish and stingrays on his previous tour, we only glimpsed one stingray, spotted by a guest. He acknowledged that high tide isn’t ideal for spotting these creatures, raising the question of why they would schedule a tour during high tide. It seems possible that Grant was new to leading this tour. If so, having a more experienced guide along would have benefited both the group and his learning experience. Based on other reviews, there are skilled guides in the organization.
It was a lovely day on the water, but the tour itself left much to be desired. After around 15 minutes of paddling, we waited over 20 minutes for a freighter passing by from about a kilometer away, which cut into our time at other bays. Our guide, Grant, primarily interacted with one guest in his kayak instead of addressing the entire group. In fact, a guest pointed out a few birds that he didn't recognize. He mentioned we might paddle under an archway but was unsure of its location, even after checking his phone, resulting in us missing that opportunity. Although he talked about seeing numerous starfish and stingrays on his first tour, we only caught a brief glimpse of one stingray, spotted by another guest. He acknowledged that high tide isn’t ideal for seeing these creatures, which raises the question of why a tour would be scheduled during high tide. It's possible that our guide was new to the tour. If that’s the case, it may have been better to have a more experienced guide along to enhance the experience for everyone and allow him to learn as well. Other reviews mention that there are plenty of skilled guides in the organization.
We chose Marlborough Sounds Adventure Co due to their helpfulness before we booked, providing plenty of information and accommodating our cruise port schedule. The equipment was clean and of good quality, and the pre-kayaking briefing was clear. The two guides, Hannah and Hannah, were outstanding—very informative and eager to assist. Their knowledge and communication skills were excellent. We highly recommend this company for your kayaking experience.
Despite the cloudy, windy, and drizzly conditions, we had an amazing time. The views were stunning and I even spotted a seal before it swam away. Although the trip was challenging due to the wind and waves, we felt entirely secure with our patient and supportive guide. I would definitely do this again and highly recommend it, even in less-than-ideal weather. I enjoyed this much more than staying indoors or just walking around in the rain.
