Currituck Beach Lighthouse — places to visit in Outer Banks
Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Outer Banks — view 2
Currituck Beach Lighthouse is a historic brick tower standing 162 feet tall on the northern Outer Banks, completed in 1875 to guide ships through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic. Its distinctive red exterior and black lantern make it a prominent landmark along the coastline, surrounded by maritime forests and the charming village of Corolla. Visiting the lighthouse offers a climb up 220 steps for panoramic views of the Currituck Sound and the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for both light and fewer crowds, and don’t miss the nearby whalehead club, which adds to the area's rich history.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Outer Banks Self Guided Audio Tour, which provided us with a wealth of interesting historical information about the area. The narrator was clear and engaging. However, it was a bit confusing that the tour was divided into two separate sections: Hatteras National Seashore on the south end and Kitty Hawk on the north end, and this distinction wasn't clearly communicated at the time of booking. Overall, it was a great value, and we appreciated the flexibility to pause and resume at our convenience.bethn636 on the Self-guided audio driving tour of the Outer Banks tour
