We had already scheduled the Riverboat Discovery tour with lunch, so I added this last-minute activity. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. We gained significant knowledge about the Gold Dredge and its operations. Our guide was both informative and engaging. At the conclusion, we disembarked the train to try gold panning and tour the actual gold dredge building. If you have a full day available, I highly recommend combining both Gold Dredge 8 and the Riverboat Discovery, and the optional lunch was quite good too.
This tour was part of our Princess Land journey, included alongside the Discovery Paddlewheel trip. Although panning for gold seemed a bit cheesy, it turned out to be an enjoyable experience. The historical insights into Gold Dredging were fascinating as we traveled by train, observing displays and listening to informative guides. All the guides were excellent and very supportive. Everyone ended up finding gold in their pans, and there was even a weighing station to show how much gold you had panned. It was a fun experience and definitely worthwhile for anyone visiting Alaska.
I joined a tour group and had an excellent guide who thoroughly explained the various mining processes and the operation of the dredge. Exploring the dredge was truly interesting, and I also had the chance to pan for gold, which I got to keep. The tour concluded with a short discussion about the oil pipeline. It was a fantastic experience.
This ranks as a close second on my must-do list in Fairbanks and is truly worth your time. The experience includes a train ride to Gold Dredge 8, an enormous machine that ceased operations in the 1950s. You also get to try gold panning with some exceptionally patient instructors before taking a train ride back with great views of the Alaskan pipeline. The guides were knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about this aspect of Alaska’s history. It’s especially fun for kids, and you're very likely to find some gold.
As train enthusiasts, we are eager to join any tour that features a train. We initially expected it to be somewhat “cheesy,” but it exceeded our expectations. Our guide provided extensive knowledge about the history of the gold rush and gold mining techniques. We had a great time panning for gold and exploring the beautiful center. I truly have no negative comments about this experience. The two-hour tour is well worth the price, and we highly recommend it for people of all ages.
We received a short overview of the Alyeska Pipeline before boarding a charming train that took us to the Gold Dredge. There, we got the chance to pan for gold, which was thrilling. The anticipation was palpable. Afterward, we explored the gift shop and the dredge itself before returning on the train. The staff were knowledgeable and supportive. It was a fantastic glimpse into history.
This tour was both enjoyable and informative. It started with a discussion on the pipeline, detailing its construction, maintenance, and its effects on local wildlife. We then took a train ride to the dredge, during which we learned about the area's gold mining history, complete with demonstrations of historical mining tools. We even got to experience gold panning ourselves, which was quite a challenge. The explanation of the dredge operations and the reasons for their closure was fascinating. We were able to keep any gold we panned, and snacks with drinks were a delightful touch. The shop featured antique mining tools, fossils, and pelts, adding to the overall interest. The facilities were well-kept and tidy.
Our Alaska trip kicked off with this tour, and it was wonderful. We gained a lot of insight into the gold rush and the Fairbanks region. The guide kept our group of six (all over 25) fully engaged. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Fairbanks.
Although the weather was cool, the enthusiasm of the young guides and their team was infectious. Throughout the tour, it felt as though we were their first visitors, and the excitement reminiscent of the gold rush was palpable. Tim's narration was fantastic, and the crew was very helpful during gold panning, leading to our success. The venue, with its historic significance and living history, left me in awe. I was particularly struck by the beautiful flowers and hanging baskets; I've never encountered such incredible beauty on my travels this summer, a testament to hard work and horticultural talent. It was a wonderful way to conclude my summer adventures.
It was just average. My partner enjoyed dredging, but I found it uninteresting. However, I noticed that other couples seemed to be having a good time. There are some nice shops inside.
