The boat was smaller than expected, but it performed safely. We experienced five bites in choppy waters and managed to land two fish. I hooked a huge one, and my son-in-law and I had to work together to fight it until it broke the 200 lb test line.
The experience was disappointing and not at all as promised. I expected a quality boat with good gear for four people, but instead, we were given a shabby vessel without outriggers or padded seats, and old equipment. An English-speaking crew member explained that they had subcontracted this inferior boat. During the trip, we endured unsafe practices, such as siphoning gas from a non-approved source. The rods and lines were outdated, and interaction from the crew was minimal. To make matters worse, we only fished with three rods instead of four, and the nicer boat arrived after we left, catching fish with their superior setup.
Our time with Nick and his team was incredible. As an enthusiastic fishing family, we found the trip very fruitful, catching three barracuda, including a huge one, along with various other species we released. After the adventure, we returned to Nacional Beach Club, where the restaurant prepared our fish into delicious tacos and a platter while we enjoyed the pool. Everything was excellent! This was the highlight of our excursions in Costa Maya.
We experienced an incredible day of fishing with Captain Nick and his team. He’s a wonderful person and a true expert in his field. Today, we targeted barracuda, which provided a thrilling challenge. I highly recommend booking with Captain Nick; you won’t be disappointed.
While the fishing was enjoyable and the captains were friendly, the restaurant's management regarding our catch prep was disappointing. If you plan to eat your catch, you might want to look elsewhere. After waiting two hours, we received only one of the five fish we caught, as the staff claimed they needed to keep the remainder for their boss, suggesting there was too much to serve. My son, a hungry 14-year-old athlete, was particularly affected since we hadn't eaten breakfast. We spent four frustrating hours trying to get all the fish we paid for served to us. This experience was unprofessional and left us feeling quite dissatisfied.
The seas were rough, with waves reaching 4-6+ feet for most of the trip. We didn't catch any fish, only pulling up seaweed. After about three hours, we abruptly turned around and had a quick and bumpy ride back to shore. The two young guides seemed inexperienced with local fishing patterns. As experienced anglers, we know that not every trip results in a catch, but we're confused by their trolling methods.
We took a three-hour fishing excursion and had a fantastic experience. The crew put in a lot of effort, the boat was spotless, and all the gear was well-maintained. We hooked four fish and successfully caught two. We had them cooked at the on-site restaurant, and the taste was incredible.

Their expertise and efficiency stood out, and they were considerate of our schedule to return to the cruise ship, allowing us plenty of time to enjoy the expertly prepared and delicious meal from our catch. Nick was a remarkable host and guide, going above and beyond in helping us with the preparation. We rate this experience a perfect 10 out of 10 and would definitely choose this team again if we come back.
Before you book, consider the following points: 1. This isn't a typical hands-on fishing trip. The crew handles the fishing while guests only reel in the catch. If that suits your expectations, you'll likely appreciate the hardworking and friendly crew. 2. Blue water fly fishing wasn't available during our outing, despite its mention in the tour details. Nick informed us it required prior arrangements, but despite my attempts to set it up, I either got no reply or was told the day before that it would be only "trolling/sport fishing." 3. The tour description stated that you could enjoy the fish at a nearby hotel, but that option was never presented to us. Instead, we were simply taken back to the beach at the end of the trip. Overall, while the experience was nice and the crew was engaging, I wish I had been privy to this information before booking, as the actual experience differed from what was advertised. I hope this helps future guests understand what they're signing up for.
