Meet your guide at a central location in Mahahual for a half-day excursion that includes a 1.5-hour guided tour of the Chacchoben archaeological site. Dating back to around 300 AD, the site features significant structures, including Templo 24 and Gran Plaza. The guided portion covers the rich history of this ancient Mayan city.
Following the tour, enjoy a walk through the jungle to learn about local plant life and perhaps spot some of the region's wildlife, such as various bird species and spider monkeys. This activity allows for an engaging exploration of both the historical and natural aspects of the area.

From the beginning, the communication was excellent. I received a confirmation email after booking, a follow-up the day before, and a phone call on the morning of the tour. The small group size was a significant advantage, with just eight of us from three different ships, allowing for a maximum of ten. The vehicle was a late model, clean, and had effective air conditioning. Raphael was an outstanding tour guide and driver! His narration during the drive and at the tour site was superb; he was both knowledgeable and friendly. We enjoyed snacks, water, sodas, and beers throughout the day. A visit to a local fruit stand provided complimentary tastings of delicious pineapple and mango. Additionally, we sampled 12 salsas at a local salsa maker and had the chance to buy bottles to take home. I highly recommend Chac Ek, especially Raphael!
Fantastic tour! The guide was excellent and I would definitely choose to book with him again.
The information provided was inadequate compared to previous trips I've booked. While at sea, I struggled to find any information or make calls due to no service. My family was looking forward to this excursion, which cost us $960. We received a message stating we missed the bus that morning, and after reviewing all the emails, I could only locate the tickets and recommendations for other activities. Overall, we were very disappointed.
The tour of the archaeological site was fantastic, and Juan was an informative and enthusiastic guide. There was a slight issue with the meeting location, which required a bit of walking, though it's not the operator's fault. The effort was definitely worth it, especially with the small group size, making the experience even better.
This was a fantastic tour of the Mayan ruins led by an outstanding and knowledgeable guide, Juan Crona. The drive from the port takes about 50 minutes, so be mindful of your ship's departure time.
I had an excellent experience with Andre as our driver and Rafel as our guide. They provided snacks and drinks, and we made stops to sample pineapple and enjoy lunch at roadside stands. Both were polite and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this excursion.
We had an excellent tour of the Mayan ruins with Raphael, who offered cold drinks and snacks while sharing his extensive knowledge. Visiting a fruit stand for fresh pineapple and a salsa stand to buy a few bottles was a highlight. This excursion was a wonderful addition to our MSC cruise.
Raphael guided us on an excellent tour of the Mayan ruins. He offered cold drinks and snacks and was both professional and knowledgeable. We also stopped at a fruit stand for the best pineapple and a salsa stand, where I bought some bottles for myself and others. This excursion was a highlight of our MSC cruise.
Francisco, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the ruins and Mayan cultural traditions. This tour was enlightening and satisfying for my family. It was a small group, and surprisingly more affordable than the larger bus tours offered by the cruise line. They provided complimentary drinks and snacks, so we didn’t need to bring any. I highly recommend it.
I mixed up the starting time, believing it to be 9:30am, but it was actually at 8:15am for other cruise passengers. The tour details mentioned they would generally wait until 9:30am, so I thought I was within the expected timeframe. Finding the exit from the port shops was a bit challenging due to unclear signage, but ultimately, a local guide helped us to the meeting point. We took a car to another location where other guests were waiting, and that first ride lasted nearly an hour. Once we joined the tour guide, I found the information provided to be very enriching. The guide explained the Mayan culture and sights in great detail. It was a bonus that bottled water and snacks, including some fresh fruit at the end, were included in the tour price. With only ten participants, the group felt intimate. The guide skillfully brought us to locations that minimized crowding, allowing plenty of time for photos. Although some steps were steep, my 75-year-old mother managed, as the guide offered an option for those who needed an easier climb, which still involved some steep terrain but had rock walls for support. We also stopped at the lighthouse for a quick photo opportunity before returning to the ship.
