Thirty-minute walk to Mjelle Beach — a family-friendly coastal stroll featuring unique white and red sands rich in gemstone particles.
A straightforward thirty-minute hike from the car park leads you to Mjelle Beach, a favorite spot for locals seeking a quick escape from Bodø. The beach is known for its striking combination of white and red sands, the latter coloured by garnet mineral particles, making it an intriguing natural site.
This outing is especially suitable for families, with an easy path that even young children can manage. The beach acts like a large sandpit for kids, where they can engage with the free rocks and shells along the shore. Don't forget to pack some snacks and enjoy the scenic views.

I had an excellent experience on the tour. We had pleasant weather, and our guide was friendly, attentive, and professional. We explored various sights and viewpoints in Bodo before making our way to Mjelle Beach, where we could walk at our own pace and take in the breathtaking scenery around us.
We were in search of the beach with amethyst sand, but instead, we encountered free-range sheep, stunning peaks overlooking the bay, and pristine clear waters. The hike from the clearly marked parking area was quite easy, and there were a handful of tent campers present.
My wife and I just got back from our trip to Norway, filled with wonderful memories. Among the many incredible experiences, the visit to Mjelle Beach stood out as the highlight. The stunning scenery truly ignited our sense of adventure as we explored the red garnet sand, unique rock formations, tide pools, streams, and waterfalls. Our guide, Ivar, greatly enhanced this experience with his knowledge and enthusiasm. On the way to the beach, he provided insightful commentary about the sights we were passing and set a fun tone for the day. During the hike, he made sure we navigated the rocky terrain safely, all while encouraging our curiosity. At the beach, Ivar welcomed all of our questions and let us explore freely. With all the incredible attractions in Norway, the trip to Mjelle Beach was just breathtaking, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Norway.
My experience with Ivar was exceptional. With a group of eight in Bodo, he provided valuable assistance before our trip and was available to help us throughout our stay. Ivar has extensive local knowledge and shared interesting facts as we traveled to various activities. He is always punctual, dependable, and undoubtedly the best tour guide I’ve ever had.
The trip to the beach with Ingrid was delightful. She spoke English very well and made sure to guide us carefully to avoid any slips. Overall, it was a relaxing day.
This experience was incredible. Our guide was fantastic, knowledgeable, and consistently checked the terrain ahead. We engaged in some great discussions about Norway and beyond. He went above and beyond to assist us during our time in Bodo. I highly recommend it.
Ivar was an exceptional guide, striking the perfect balance between allowing me space and providing valuable information. He kindly proceeded with the tour despite being the only participant that day. In addition to Mjelle, he introduced me to two other stunning lakes and shared a couple of his personal favorite spots.
Our trip in Bodø was fantastic, taking us to Norway's most stunning beach. Our guide Ivar picked us up punctually at the hotel, providing excellent service. The journey from Bodø to Mjelle beach was filled with breathtaking scenery, a hidden gem of happiness. Ivar was approachable and answered all our questions, making this experience highly recommendable. The hike was suitable for us as novice hikers—easy and enjoyable. We'd do it again in a heartbeat. Additionally, Ivar shared some wonderful tips, including a delightful boat tour we took based on his suggestion. If you're in Bodø, this tour is essential. Thanks, Ivar, for the unforgettable memories. Best wishes from Germany, Matz.
The hike to Mjelle beach and the stunning lakes was incredible. Julia and Hannah were exceptionally friendly and provided us with valuable tips for the remainder of our visit. It would be challenging to reach the Mjelle parking area without a car, and I highly recommend this tour.
Cruise ships dock in Bodo close to the town and near the rail station, making the ridge-line of mountains to the Northeast easily accessible for walking. There are hiking paths leading from peak to peak. The most recognizable hiking markers, visible from the ship, are the large antenna tower and the "Wood Hotel" perched on the ridge. Our ship provided Bodo tourist information maps showing various ways to reach nearby trails, but these maps stop short of the ridge-line, so it might be wise to download hiking trail maps ahead of time or utilize a location app. We took the closest path indicated on the town map, but it had some slippery and steep sections, which may be challenging for beginners. Multiple access points to the ridge-line trails exist, with paths varying from beginner to moderate difficulty levels, and some areas can be somewhat strenuous, so knowing your limits is crucial. For an easy option with great views, I recommend taking the road leading to the antenna tower, as shown on the tourist map we received. This route provides a healthy walk, and once at the top, you can decide if you want to explore further. Be aware that some trails can be challenging to locate and follow, making a map or app useful. However, don't let that deter you; just keep your bearings and look for the antenna tower if you get lost. The scenery is stunning, so take the time to enjoy the area around and above Bodo. Additionally, there are signs and trail markers in town, but construction on the main road limited our ability to follow them, leading us to alter our routes on the fly, so I can't comment on their effectiveness.
