I don't have much to say, so I will keep it short. I bought 7 annual passes based on the promise of many attractions but found it to be a letdown. It felt deserted, with hardly anyone in costumes and no interactions. There was no background music or live performances, and many tours were closed. Construction was ongoing in the main area. Despite paying extra for tickets that were not even checked, access was free for everyone. Snack prices were exorbitant. We did go on some tours, including a ghost tour, but it was unimpressive and not scary at all. Overall, I was disappointed and unlikely to return soon. While Jamestown was enjoyable, we never got to visit Yorktown.
My wife and I took a week off for my birthday to explore the Americas Historic Triangle, and it was a fantastic experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Colonial Williamsburg, making sure to visit all open locations. We learned a lot about the Church's history and received an insightful briefing from a knowledgeable gentleman named William Blanton. Our visit to the Colonial Williamsburg Museum was a full-day affair, featuring an impressive collection of items, particularly in the weapons and antique furniture sections. Jamestown and Yorktown were also highlights. At Jamestown, don't miss the glass blowing shop—it's worth a visit to purchase some of their lovely items. The Exhibition site, with its replica fort, boats, and Native village, was fascinating. We appreciated visiting the actual Jamestown town and its museum, which showcased numerous artifacts and historical collections. Although we had gone to the other locations five years ago, we finally visited Yorktown this time and were not disappointed. The museum is filled with artifacts and historical details, and the live demonstrations at the military camp brought the past to life. Witnessing musket and cannon firings and exploring a Colonial-era farm made it a memorable trip. We also toured the Surrender field, where Washington's troops forced the British surrender, as well as the battlefield and the graves of Civil War veterans buried there. This journey through our country's history is not to be missed.
Colonial Williamsburg was an incredible experience for us. My husband visited for the first time, and we felt there was still so much left uncovered after 2½ days. We explored the Governor’s Palace, Capital, and Courthouse, with a fun albeit brief carriage ride. Bruton Parish Church, founded in 1674, is an absolute highlight. The fife and drum demonstration, as well as the numerous shops, were wonderful. The knowledgeable costumed interpreters and artisans enhance the historical narrative, allowing visitors to sometimes take on historical roles, like I did when I portrayed Jane Vobe in a courthouse case—my husband even ended up as one of the judges. Our engagement brought to life some legal history. The evening program “Revolutionary Points of View” was particularly impactful, set in the Capitol Building by candlelight where visitors debate the merits of going to war with England, immersing us in the thoughts of 18th-century individuals. My husband later noted that this program significantly deepened his historical understanding. Dining at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern and King’s Arms Tavern was a treat, complete with musicians performing period music. Walking along Duke of Gloucester Street by the glow of firewood baskets, we enjoyed various entertainers and reenactors. Regardless of the time of day, there was always something happening. I recommend planning ahead to prioritize must-see attractions and securing dinner reservations. Staying within Colonial Williamsburg greatly enhances the experience without worrying about parking. Our visit was merely a glimpse of what’s available, and it's fair to say we loved every moment. Even months later, it still resonates with us, and we eagerly anticipate our next visit.
We thoroughly enjoyed discovering the history of Williamsburg. Our experience at the Powhatan Hilton was outstanding, and we loved exploring the museums and Colonial Williamsburg. We will surely return.
We visited Williamsburg at the end of our homeschooling year focused on early modern history, and it was an incredible experience to engage with what we had learned. The tradespeople were fantastic and eager to answer questions, though we had a less favorable interaction with someone at the capitol. King's Arms Tavern offers exceptional food. The only downside was the lack of a 24-hour schedule in advance. We tried to get it the day before to plan our visit, but due to a schedule change, we could only obtain the schedule for that day. It wasn’t until later that we were allowed to collect the next day's schedule. They really should provide it earlier for those who come in to inquire.
There is a lot to explore on foot, and the surroundings are beautiful. You can enjoy it in a day or perhaps two. The Weavers and Bookbinders offered excellent historical insights, and the Blacksmith was impressive as well. It wasn’t crowded on an October Tuesday, and the bus service around the outer ring of the town is extremely helpful, especially at night. However, it felt a bit random regarding what was open, as we encountered several closed shops and buildings. The quality of the historical experience also seemed to depend on the staff present in each location. My main issue was purchasing tickets for Jamestown, Yorktown, and CW online in advance but still facing a long wait at the ticket desk due to disconnected systems. That was quite frustrating. Despite this, I’m glad we visited and would recommend it to others.
The scale of this attraction was impressive. You could definitely spend an entire day exploring. Numerous costumed staff were available to provide historical insights and help. It's a must-visit if you're nearby.
We had an excellent time over four days in Williamsburg. Our grandchildren benefitted greatly from the educational experience, and the adults also gained valuable insights into our history. While we were in the region, we visited Yorktown and Jamestown as well.
Colonial Williamsburg transports you to the past with costumed guides and a variety of historical homes and buildings to explore. There's plenty to experience, including horse-drawn carriage rides, taverns, and a deep dive into America's history. Additionally, Yorktown and Jamestown offer their own attractions, including museums and dining options, making it a great way to learn about the nation, especially during the 250th anniversary celebrations.
As a grandma passionate about history, I was thrilled to watch my grandchildren eagerly engage with our country's origins. They thoroughly enjoyed the games, plays, and showed great interest during the tours. The musket firings and militia training were highlights for them, despite their playful dismissal at the end. The horse-drawn carriage ride through the town was one of our favorite experiences, and the art museum was impressive as well. I would love to return for an entire day!
