This two-hour guided tour involves paddling in clear kayaks through Vieques' famed bioluminescent bay. You'll meet across from the Sun Bay Beach entrance in Esperanza 25 minutes before your scheduled start time for check-in. Expect to learn about the science behind this natural wonder as you navigate the glowing waters surrounded by marine life.
Note that Vieques is an island separate from mainland Puerto Rico, so it's recommended to book ferry tickets well in advance. The earliest tour allows for a return on the latest weekday ferry at 9:30 PM. On weekends, the latest ferry departs at 9 PM, so timing should be considered. Cancellations are free up to 24 hours before the tour.

Initially, I felt a bit uneasy due to the darkness, but the guides quickly put me at ease, and their instructions were simple to follow. Be prepared to get wet; it's best to wear a bathing suit or shorts you don't mind soaking. Witnessing the brilliant stars above and the glowing water beneath as we paddled in the clear-bottomed kayak was absolutely enchanting. Highly recommend.

The comfortable, air-conditioned ride made the trip very pleasant. The hosts and guides were enthusiastic and well-informed about this natural spectacle. They provided life jackets and clear kayaks and paddles, making us feel secure throughout. While previous kayaking experience helps, it’s not essential; the water is calm, warm, and free of strong currents, plus the bugs were minimal. The guides’ passion for this phenomenon and their commitment to protecting it is clear. We chose the earliest evening time slot to catch the last ferry back, but the brightness of the bioluminescence still amazed us. The excursion struck a great balance between insightful commentary and time for personal exploration and enjoyment. Our group shared many laughs, making it a memorable experience. This adventure is definitely worth the investment, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to witness the bioluminescence.
