Two hours on a 24-foot electric catamaran—witness the bioluminescent glow of Mosquito Bay, recognized as the brightest in the world.
This boat tour traverses Mosquito Bay, noted for being the brightest bioluminescent bay globally, as listed by The Guinness Book of World Records. The experience lasts two hours aboard a 24-foot electric catamaran, offering an alternative to kayaking for those seeking a unique way to observe this natural phenomenon.
Before heading out, it's essential to secure ferry tickets at puertoricoferry.com, as an overnight stay in Vieques is necessary to participate. Staying in Esperanza enhances the experience, placing you near some of the best local spots. Be prepared to witness the incredible glow that makes this bay a natural wonder.

We invested in two airline tickets with Air Vieques, along with an additional $400 in luggage fees since we arrived directly from a cruise, just to see the bay. So, we were extremely disappointed when we found out at 4:00 pm on the day of the tour that it was canceled due to the inability to secure a transport van to the boat. Several other passengers were waiting as well. We all had cars and could have driven ourselves or hired a taxi to the boat. They suggested rescheduling for the next day, but we were departing the following morning. I believe the provider needs to recognize that travelers come to the island specifically for this experience, and unless issues like weather, crew shortages, or mechanical problems arise, they should strive to fulfill the tour commitments.
The customer service was awful, and I cannot recommend this tour company. I got a text earlier indicating that all tours were moved up by 30 minutes, then another text an hour before our meeting time. They didn't answer my call about the cancellation text, but called back just 15 minutes before we were supposed to leave to say it was still on and that the boat issue wasn't that serious. When I called them back, they suddenly decided to cancel again, all within a span of five minutes.
We recently finished our boat tour led by Captain Eddy, and he was fantastic. His knowledge was impressive. The Bay was stunning, and the starry night sky featured various planets and constellations that he highlighted. The bioluminescent bay was amazing, and watching the fish was enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour.
Our tour of Mosquito Bay in Vieques with Isla Nena Bio Bay Tours exceeded our expectations and was truly remarkable. We timed our visit to coincide with a moonset occurring before sunset, ensuring the moonlight wouldn’t interfere with our experience. Opting for an electric boat instead of a kayak was wise given our ages (60s and 70s). After a bumpy van ride over unpaved roads, we navigated a narrow walkway to the boat, where two staff members provided assistance by wading in the water on either side. Once on the water, our guide shared fascinating insights about the bioluminescence and the starlit sky above. We were thrilled to stir the water with poles and witness the glow, while fish jumping near the surface created effects reminiscent of shooting stars. The guide was knowledgeable and pointed out constellations. It was a stunning experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Puerto Rico.
This tour is a must-do. We were keen on the Mosquito Bay experience but struggled with logistics. Fortunately, our hotel helped us book a last-minute spot. Robert, the captain and owner, ensured we were well taken care of from the start, even arranging our ferry tickets and transportation to Esperanza, with his wife Glenda driving us. The tour was truly enchanting. As the sole operator with a boat, Robert allowed us to avoid the crowds and fully appreciate the experience. The night sky was stunning, and he pointed out various constellations. We enjoyed dinner at Duffy’s, where the fish tacos were the best I’ve had. I highly recommend this tour; it was absolutely worth it. Thanks, Robert and Glenda!
Interesting experience, but it felt excessively priced. Both the teens and adults quickly lost interest. Additionally, it’s important to note that there are no amenities near the pick-up location, and if you are on the 10 PM tour, failing to pre-book a taxi means you'll be left stranded.
Our guide was fantastic, sharing insights about the bay's uniqueness and the intriguing bioluminescent creatures and their connections. He also devoted time to discussing the sky, planets, and stars.
I highly suggest taking the boat tour! The crew is welcoming, and the guide possesses a wealth of knowledge. It’s truly an outstanding experience overall.
The boat tour was fantastic. The guide displayed impressive knowledge and was open to answering all kinds of questions. It offers a truly unique experience suitable for people of all ages.
This was an outstanding experience. The tour was exceptionally well organized. We visited with our two kids, ages 14 and 10, and chose the 7 pm tour so we could easily catch the ferry back. It’s also easy to arrange a taxi to the pier at the beginning of the tour for $10 per person.
