What's the itinerary?+
• Begin the journey at the Main Square, where you can appreciate the remarkable display of Renaissance architecture featuring a skyline filled with towers, turrets, and crenellations. Nestled among the grand facades are quaint boutiques, bars, and cafes. The city's history prominently features the renowned Trujillo-born conquistador Francisco Pizarro, whose large equestrian statue looms over the square. • On the southwest corner of the square stands the Palace of the Marquis of the Conquest. During his conquest of Peru, Francisco married an Inca princess. This mansion, constructed for his brother, showcases the family's impressive legacy with intricate carvings from the Fernando brothers and their Inca wives, along with the family crest, and depictions of the walls of Cuzco in present-day Peru, and Pizarro's ships. • Next, view the Palace of Orellana-Pizarro, which belonged to a cousin of Francisco Pizarro who was the first Mayor of Cuzco. The structure enchants visitors with its appealing Plateresque courtyard in front of a beautiful Renaissance arched doorway that is flanked by two substantial 14th-century towers. • Continue through the winding cobblestone alleyways to uncover the concealed ancient Trujillo Pool. This 14-meter stone construction, complete with a descending staircase for water collection and cleaning, dates back to the time when Arabs held sway over the city. • Proceed to the Triumph Gate, where a legend states that the Virgin of Victory, the city's patron saint whose statue is positioned on the wall facing the city, appeared at the gate to inspire Christian forces during the decisive reconquest of Trujillo from the Arabs. • Next, visit the Church of Santa María la Mayor, a Gothic church from the 13th century that housed the tombs of prominent Trujillo families from the Middle Ages. A key highlight is a stunning 15th-century altarpiece featuring twenty-five exquisite paintings that depict the life of Jesus Christ. • Then, walk past the remnants of the Monastery of San Francisco the Real. This charming former convent, with its impressive stone walls covered in greenery, was the site of a historical relationship between Gonzalo Pizarro and his servant Francisca González Mateos, who became the mother of the famed conqueror Francisco Pizarro. • Conclude at the grand fortification of Trujillo Alcazaba. Perched on a hill overlooking expansive plains, this medieval fortress has silently observed fierce battles between Christians and Arabs, imparting a profound historical significance to the site. Walking along the seemingly unassailable walls provides stunning views of Trujillo and the surrounding countryside, as well as insight into its tumultuous past.
