Eight and a half hours, group tour — Sümela Monastery, Zigana Mountain, lunch in nature, and Hamsiköy rice pudding stop included.
A full-day group tour departing from Trabzon at 9:30 AM, this itinerary captures some of the region's must-see landmarks. The first stop is Sümela Monastery, located dramatically on cliffs at 1200 metres within Altındere National Park. After a short shuttle ride, there’s a scenic 10-minute walk to explore this historic site.
Next, head to Zigana Mountain Summit at 2000 metres for panoramic views and a leisurely lunch break amidst nature. The route takes you along the historic Silk Road, with a visit to the quaint village of Hamsiköy, known for its traditional rice pudding. Before returning to Trabzon around 6 PM, stop at the glass terrace in Torul for stunning valley views and enjoy some local shopping for regional delicacies.

Be prepared for stairs! I didn't enter the monastery, but the views and the café made the effort worthwhile. I also gained a lot of knowledge about it online.
The ticket I bought clearly stated that the entrance fee to the Sumela monastery was included, but when I arrived, I was informed that I needed to purchase a separate 20 euro ticket to enter. This feels like outright deception.
We managed to fit so much into a single day without any sense of being hurried. Our departure and return were punctual, and both the transport and our guide, Hakan, were outstanding. I strongly recommend the Zagnos tour. While Sümela Monastery was incredible, the restaurant and cave visits were also noteworthy.
The experience with this company was extremely disappointing. We were on a shared bus and had to pay an extra 500 TL for hotel pickup. It wasn't communicated that we needed cash for a 20 euro entrance fee, so we had to pay in USD and received a refund in TL. Additionally, there was an extra fee of 70 TL to get on a shuttle to Sumela Monastery. The guide provided minimal information in poor English. We were taken to a very expensive lunch in a cold mountain area, despite other affordable options available, and made several unnecessary stops at overpriced places. Each stop required additional entrance fees, and it would have been helpful to know the costs and payment methods in advance. The company was unprofessional; they even overbooked the bus and removed three passengers. The guide struggled to manage the group, and the tour was poorly organized, ultimately a waste of time and money. It's advisable to choose a different company for your tour.
The guide was pleasant and we appreciated the ride, but the organization left much to be desired due to overbooking. We returned four hours later without adequate information on what additional money to bring or what clothing to wear for the cold cave. The costs were 20€ for the monastery (no lira accepted), 70 lira for the shuttle, and 100 lira for the cave. The stairs to the monastery were numerous and the guide didn’t provide a comprehensive tour, often leaving us rushed at the meeting point. Despite this, we enjoyed the locations visited and the guide's multilingual skills.
The experience was unforgettable with visits to charming, hidden locations. The weather was pleasant, the group was wonderful, and our guide was exceptionally friendly. Highly recommended.
This was one of our top tours in Trabzon. We had a skilled driver and an informed tour guide, allowing us to visit multiple sites all in a single day.
This trip was incredibly full, visiting many places with comfortable transport and ample time at each stop. The tour guide was excellent, making it a worthwhile expense.
I was hoping for more storytelling about the locations, but it felt more like just a taxi service. Additionally, half of the monastery was off-limits due to stone debris.
We enjoyed two day trips with Zagnos Tours, a well-established company. The first trip included Sumele Monastery, Hamsikoy, and Cal Cave, while the second took us to Hidirnebi Plateau. Both excursions were excellent. A big thanks to our guides, Mais on the first trip and Mustafa on the second. Highly recommended for their great value.
