• Pickup will occur at 7:30 A.M. from your hotel located in central Thanjavur, followed by an approximately one-hour drive to Kumbakonam for a full day of touring. Upon arrival, you will meet a local guide who speaks English. Kumbakonam was an important city between the 7th and 9th centuries AD, serving as the capital for the Medieval Cholas. Its prosperity peaked during British rule, making it a significant hub for European education and Hindu culture, earning it the nickname, “Cambridge of South India.” The itinerary begins at the Mahamaham Tank, followed by a visit to the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple located outside the city. This temple was constructed to surpass the Brahadisvara temple in Thanjavur, which dates back to the 11th century, and is famous for housing the largest Shivalingam in South India. Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant (beverages not included). • After lunch, the tour continues to Rajan Industries, a bronze manufacturing unit, to observe the casting of bronze statues. Next, a visit to Iravatheeswarar Temple, a UNESCO site located in Darasuram, will take place. The final stop will be at a silk weaving center, where you can watch a demonstration of silk weaving and browse the available silk products for purchase. At the end of the day, your driver will return you to your hotel in the Thanjavur city center.
