Our adventure began with a drive to a scenic overlook that showcased the scale of dairy farming in Terceira. We then met the dairy farmer and a farmhand, and of course, the cows. This was not a passive tour; we got involved directly in the action. Interacting with the adorable calves and even milking a cow ourselves was a highlight, followed by enjoying fresh milk in the field. Carolina provided detailed explanations throughout the process and addressed all our questions, ensuring comfort and safety for both us and the cows. We followed the entire process from cleanup to milk delivery and helped with feeding the teenage cows. To wrap up an excellent day, we enjoyed a delightful snack of cheese and bread. Everyone we encountered was remarkable; we learned a great deal, gaining insight into the hard work often overlooked when we simply grab items from grocery store shelves. Being close to such gentle, large animals was truly special. We observed their personalities — some were curious, while others peacefully chewed, taking in their surroundings. This experience enhanced our appreciation for the dedication necessary to run a farm. The warmth from the people running this experience made it exceptional; they were friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about their work and animals. Nothing felt contrived or commercial; it was a genuine sharing of real farm life. We came away with big smiles and newfound respect for farmers everywhere.
This experience was truly incredible. Carolina's enthusiasm made it feel like we were spending time with friends. Both she and her dad have extensive knowledge about the island's dairy industry, sharing the whole process and responding to numerous questions. As someone working in agriculture in the US, it was fascinating to observe the contrasts in practices.
This was an incredible opportunity to see one of the few remaining dairy farmers on the island. The tour of the family farm and the community was highly informative. Our guide provided local snacks during our break, which were delightful. Experiencing the farmer's routine of milking, transporting the milk to the drop-off station, and repeating the process twice daily truly showcased the dedication present on the island. I would absolutely book this again.
