• The history of Taos Plaza can be traced back to 1796 when land was granted by the King of Spain to 63 families, establishing it as the primary settlement following Taos Pueblo. The plaza was designed as a fortified area with homes organized in large quadrangles and a central entrance. It provided a refuge for livestock and served as a center for trade fairs. Although many structures were lost to fire, those surrounding the plaza today largely originate from the 1930s. Currently, it is at the center of the Taos Historic District, featuring live music, farmers markets, and numerous shopping and gallery options. • La Hacienda de los Martinez, constructed in 1804, stands as a unique example of a "Great House" in northern New Mexico from the Spanish Colonial era. Once a trade hub, it boasts thick adobe walls and was home to Severino Martinez, his spouse Maria, and their six children, including the well-known Padre Antonio Martinez. Padre Antonio was a significant figure in social reform, establishing New Mexico’s first coeducational school and introducing the first printing press to Taos. Today, the Hacienda provides insight into life in the 1800s frontier with 21 rooms arranged around two courtyards and showcases traditional arts and crafts demonstrations. • The Taos Art Museum displays remarkable exhibitions in the beautiful residence and studio designed and hand-built by the acclaimed artist Nicolai Fechin. In 1923, Russian-American artist Nicolai Fechin emigrated to the U.S., later relocating to Taos in 1926 after being invited by Mabel Dodge Luhan. The following year, his family acquired the home of Dr. J.J. Bergmans. As the two-story adobe house did not fulfill their requirements, they opted to remodel it. Over five years, Nicolai, with the assistance of masons from Taos Pueblo, reimagined the house according to their vision using a cardboard model for guidance. • Visit New Mexico's most photographed church, built in the 1700s in the traditional Spanish Colonial architectural style.
