Ninety minutes on a spacious catamaran — late-season puffins, plus potential sightings of whales and dolphins, with live commentary from knowledgeable guides.
This 90-minute cruise takes you through the stunning Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, where you have a good chance of spotting puffins, particularly in late season. Puffins nest from May to mid-September, and some stay until roughly September 20. You may also catch glimpses of marine wildlife such as whales and dolphins, especially from mid-June to mid-August, although sightings can’t be guaranteed.
On board, naturalists provide live commentary that’s both entertaining and educational, covering Newfoundland’s rich marine wildlife and heritage. The trip on a spacious catamaran ensures comfort while you enjoy the natural wonders around you. Guests can also opt for a Screech In ceremony during the cruise — it's advisable to pre-register at check-in.
Reviews
The captain of the ship provided great information during the tour. However, the shuttle cost was too high, and the commentary from the driver was difficult to hear since she was facing the window without a microphone, leaving only the front four passengers able to listen. It was wonderful to see the puffins though.
The weather was perfect for our day out, making the tour very enjoyable. We encountered large sunfish, jellyfish, and puffins. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this experience.
The trip around the island teeming with puffins was fantastic. We spotted an ocean sunfish, a humpback whale, countless puffins, and various sea birds, plus we sailed through a large jellyfish school. The guide provided informative commentary and even entertained us with songs. The weather was also ideal. Overall, it was an excellent use of our time and money.
The entire experience, starting with Joanne's pickup from my hotel to the check-in process and the cruise crew, was excellent. The staff onboard was very entertaining, and I especially enjoyed the singing from the two ladies and Screecher's performance. The educational information provided was insightful, and the cruise crew was attentive to spotting different species. It was fascinating to see the Sun Fish up close and get a good view of its size.
It was a fantastic outing with my family. The people were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The sea air felt refreshing, and as someone originally from Newfoundland, I really miss the ocean. While I didn't spot any whales this time, I hope to next time. Thank you.
This boat tour was extremely well organized and highly entertaining. The professionalism shown during the trip, along with the singing and storytelling, enhanced the experience. We spotted many puffins and even saw a large ocean sunfish, though we didn't encounter any whales.
This tour is a must for anyone wanting to see marine life. We spotted a leatherback turtle, bluefin tuna, various seabirds, and puffins. Additionally, the boat crew entertained us with singing, making it a standout experience during our visit to Newfoundland.
We went on this tour in late August and thoroughly enjoyed spotting puffins, eagles, and even a sunfish. Keep in mind that puffins lose their bright beaks after the breeding season, but they remain charming. Bringing binoculars can enhance your animal-watching experience. The Gatherall team, from the shuttle driver to the boat crew, was both friendly and professional. The presentation was well-balanced with information and humor, prioritizing everyone's safety. The boat is spacious, but you'll need to move to the sides for better views. It’s wise to dress for wind and possible rain.
We visited toward the end of the season, so our sightings were solely puffins, but as birdwatching enthusiasts, we thoroughly enjoyed watching them. They were swimming near the boat and flying around the entire time. The Gatherall boat is spacious, providing ample viewing spots for everyone. Overall, it was a genuinely enjoyable couple of hours.
The boat tour exceeded our expectations, providing a wonderful chance to see Puffins. The crew was exceptional, and we gained valuable insights into the local wildlife and the region.
