What's the itinerary?+
• Upon arrival, check in at the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center to present your park pass. • A simple and short trail leads to a scenic viewpoint of Kolob Canyons, the Pine Valley Mountains, and Red Butte. If you're limited on time for one brief hike in Kolob Canyons, this is the one to choose. • At La Verkin Overlook, enjoy an expansive view of Zion Canyon, the Virgin River Gorge, the Pine Valley Mountains, and La Verkin. To reach this location, a 15-minute round-trip drive down a gravel road is necessary. • The route passes by one of Zion's most famous canyoneering spots: The Subway. The Subway necessitates a Wilderness Permit obtained through the Zion lottery; therefore, to access The Subway, a ticket is essential. It can be approached from two directions: bottom-up or top-down. The bottom-up method is less technical, doesn't require canyoneering skills, and starts at the Left Fork trailhead to the right. • Lava Point Overlook features a basalt cliff that provides a view over a green volcanic valley filled with pinyon, juniper, and white pine trees. From this vantage point, over 2,400 meters in elevation, one can see as far as the Paunsaugunt Plateau of Bryce and even the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This viewpoint does not necessitate a hike, so as long as it is safe, we will continue on Kolob Terrace Road. • Visit one of the most photographed ghost towns in the West. This deserted Mormon settlement retains several cabins, houses, and a town hall to explore. This well-preserved glimpse into history served as the filming site for the iconic bicycle scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Remember to take many photos and share them on social media. • Grafton is a ghost town with a unique background. Unlike many abandoned settlements that were once mining towns—subject to the volatile nature of mining—Grafton serves as an agricultural ghost town. Visitors can see the derelict houses and even enter some of them. • Arrival at Zion Canyon marks our first park stop. Take some time to interact with the rangers, pick up a map, utilize restrooms, and refill water bottles. If you require a wilderness permit, collect it here as well. Check the schedule for any ranger talks or walks of interest. There’s a bookstore and a gift shop, but it's advisable to save purchases for after trails. When ready, line up for the shuttle (if in shuttle season) for the next segment of the journey. • Does the line for the park shuttle seem long? There is an alternative pathway known to some. You have the option to bypass the wait by following the sunny Pa’rus (pah-roos) trail to the Human History Museum and board the shuttle there. This trail is the only one in Zion that permits biking or walking dogs. While it's paved and easy to navigate, it stretches 1.7 miles, so it may not suit everyone. Follow signage at the Visitor Center if this seems like a fitting choice for you. • Upon reaching the Zion Human History Museum, head to the back patio to attend a well-regarded ranger talk. Even if no talk is occurring during your visit, the view of the Towers of The Virgin formation is remarkable and worth the trip. • The next viewpoint is the Court of the Patriarchs formation, featuring Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the patriarchs of Judaism. Take a moment to step out for a better perspective. • A key hiking trail is the Lower Emerald Pools, a 2-mile route showcasing water cascading from sandstone cliffs, vibrant hanging gardens, and beautiful emerald pools. This trail is suitable for families and can be accessed across from the Zion Lodge. • Disembarking at The
