This two-hour tour offers a closer look at Sitka's natural beauty and historical landmarks with local guides. Highlights include the impressive totem poles at Sitka National Historical Park, a glimpse of the rescued brown bears at Fortress of the Bear, and scenic views of Silver Bay. You’ll also pass notable sites such as the Alaska Pioneer Home, St Michael’s Cathedral, and the Sheldon Jackson Museum, while crossing the O’Connell Bridge to Japonski Island.
With a small group size capped at 10, you avoid the crowds typical of larger bus tours. Your guide uses a wireless microphone to ensure everyone can hear, even when they step outside to assist. Bring a camera to capture the picturesque scenery around Sitka.
Reviews
Our driver was excellent, but the tour did not match the description. We missed one of the key attractions, which makes the full excursion charge seem unfair.
Yvonne, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and very friendly, ensuring we saw exactly what we wanted. The van was immaculate, and she kindly dropped us off at our requested locations. We had ample time to visit all the attractions on our list. It was worth every cent.
The tour was decent, but at $100 per person, it felt overpriced. The beats were interesting, and the guide was knowledgeable, but some group members made it difficult to hear.
The tour was decent but heavily relies on the drivers' quality. Ours was friendly but not as engaging as expected. His driving also could have been better.
We had a private van tour with our family of ten. Locating the van was a breeze as it was right by the entrance where the shuttle dropped us off. We enjoyed seeing bears and took a short hike. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and delightful. I truly valued the local insights about Sitka; it is such a beautiful little city.
Larry made the experience enjoyable while sharing fascinating historical insights about the region. I appreciated his knowledge of the forest and its trees. Both he and Liz truly exceeded our expectations. We accidentally left some stuffed bears for our grandkids on the bus, but Larry brought them to our ship after his shift. Liz, who was also a driver for the same company, took my husband back to the bus barn after Larry had left. Upon returning to the port, she kindly checked with the security checkpoints, and we exchanged contact information. They managed to reach guest services, allowing me to express our gratitude for their efforts. Rob and Ashley, we highly recommend your tour operators. Thank you.
The historical park with its totems was impressive. It was a fantastic tour that provided insights into Sitka's history. Deanna, a lifelong resident, shared her knowledge about the town and expressed great pride in it.
Liz was excellent. She provided a lot of information and made sure we all had time to appreciate the details. Despite the rainy weather, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
It's not worth your time; this experience feels like a scam. The "Fortress of Bears" doesn't prioritize animal welfare. The tour guide's boasting about guns and killing sharks is disturbing, especially to those from places sensitive to violence. The approach to wildlife—such as shooting mother bears and keeping their orphaned cubs in isolation—seems cruel and misguided. It's unsettling how this facility is marketed under the guise of rehabilitation when it resembles a prison for animals. Many agree with me after participating in this experience, questioning how cruise companies and tourists accept such practices today.
There are serious concerns regarding animal welfare. It was distressing to witness bears confined to an enclosure, pacing and performing for tourists in exchange for food, with no evidence of rehabilitation or potential release. The tour operator continually discussed deer hunting, which seemed insensitive to many of the visitors. While it's recognized that guns are a part of North American culture, the focus on this during the tour was uncomfortable for us all.
