Three hours exploring Tongass National Forest with a local guide — spot eagles, seasonal salmon, and learn about Sitka’s ecology and Tlingit culture.
This guided hike lasts around three hours and covers some of the most accessible trails in America’s largest National Forest. Led by a local guide, you’ll have the chance to see bald eagles high in the trees and, if the season permits, salmon spawning in the streams. The trail is also lined with edible berries, which your guide can identify for you.
As you walk through the rainforest, discussions will touch on the traditional uses of the environment by the Tlingit people, focusing on subsistence practices, foraging, and hunting. A hiking-safety briefing is provided before the hike begins, and you can expect snacks along the way. This activity adapts easily to different skill levels among participants.

This was the highlight of our Alaskan cruise. With limited time to connect with nature during our port visit, this outing was ideal. Our guide, Sadie, picked us up at the cruise terminal and took us into the Tongass National Forest. She was friendly, engaging, and very knowledgeable about both Sitka and the local environment. We hiked into a stunning mountain valley leading to Beaver Lake, which was breathtaking in every way. As a temperate rainforest, waterfalls surrounded us, alongside towering forests, muskeg bogs, and the picturesque Beaver Lake. Sadie proved to be a skilled and patient guide, sharing insights and pointing out the various waterfalls, plants, and trees, while addressing all our inquiries. Despite the rain, which is common in this part of the Alaskan rainforest, it only enhanced the area's natural beauty. We highly recommend Sitka Walking Tours and suggest booking Sadie as your guide. It was a moderately challenging and wet hike, but equipped with the right rain gear, it made for an enjoyable day in Sitka, Alaska.
This was a wonderful experience, getting away from the constant chatter of the cruise ship and enjoying the sounds of squirrels communicating with each other instead.
We had the perfect experience hiking an easy trail in Tongass. Brie was friendly and knowledgeable about the forest. The surprise snacks were a nice touch. This hike is accessible and a great way to explore the largest National Forest in the US. Thank you, Brie.
Brie, our guide, was exceptional; she possesses a deep knowledge of Sitka and is a local herself. The meeting point is quite convenient, right at the cruise ship shuttle's drop-off and pickup location.
The hike through the forest was truly enjoyable. It was a tranquil, pleasant experience along a gentle gravel path with some hills. Our guide, Savvy, was charming and knowledgeable about the area, making the day memorable while being mindful of our hiking skills.
Julie was an exceptional guide. Her extensive knowledge and friendly demeanor truly reflected her passion for nature. I would certainly join another hike led by her. This was a fantastic introduction to hiking in Sitka for us as first-timers.
Hannah was fantastic; we gained a lot of knowledge and had a wonderful time.
This hike through the stunning Tongass forest was fantastic. Dakota provided great insights and made the experience enjoyable. Overall, it was quite an easy hike.
This hike was exceptional, with a small group of just six, making it easier to engage with our guide and absorb the scenery. We encountered very few other hikers and the forest was stunning, featuring a stream and an impressive 800-year-old tree. Our guide, Abigail, was remarkable; she offered a wealth of information about the environment and shared intriguing stories from her two years of experiences here. I highly recommend this excursion.
Dakotah guided us on the Tongass hike, and he was fantastic! He shared numerous interesting facts about the forest, Alaska, the history of the totems, and even some of his own experiences. He frequently checked on everyone to ensure we were comfortable and offered breaks when needed. The hike was enjoyable, with terrain suitable for those who don't hike regularly. I highly recommend this experience!
