Half-day cruise through Resurrection Bay—search for orca whales with local naturalists and hydrophone calls onboard.
This half-day cruise focuses solely on orca whales in the stunning landscapes of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. The tour adapts each day based on recent orca sightings, allowing for a unique experience as you set sail in search of these magnificent creatures.
Knowledgeable local captains and naturalist crew members provide insights into orca behavior and ecology throughout the journey. Onboard, a hydrophone allows you to hear the haunting calls of the whales as they communicate beneath the surface. Keep your cameras ready for potential sightings as you navigate through this pristine marine environment.

The crew was extremely pleasant and accommodating. The captain provided excellent narration throughout the trip. Complimentary coffee, tea, and water were offered, while hot chocolate, hot dogs, and chips were available for purchase. The restrooms were tidy. Items like Bonine, ginger chews, and ginger ale were also on sale. Unfortunately, the weather was cold, windy, and rainy, affecting visibility. Although we didn’t spot any whales, we enjoyed seeing sea otters, sea lions, puffins, and bald eagles. I would definitely book this tour again when the weather is nicer. Be sure to bring a coat, hat, and gloves as it’s much chillier on the water.
Our day sailing on Resurrection Bay was wonderful. We spotted a humpback whale, multiple pods of orcas, harbor and spotted seals, mountain goats, and a variety of birds, including a nesting bald eagle and puffins. The majority of our sailing was smooth, though we encountered four-foot swells in open water, causing some discomfort for a few. The crew was attentive and supportive to those who felt unwell. Four hours on the water was sufficient for us to see everything we wanted. Originally booked for a 6-hour tour, we met others in Denali NP who shared their experiences, leading us to switch to the four-hour option. We were pleased with our choice. While we personally don’t get seasick, four hours allowed for ample exploration of the wildlife.
This experience was incredible. We spotted numerous orcas, a humpback whale, mountain sheep, puffins, harbor seals, stellar sea lions, and more. The scenery was breathtaking. Captain Tammy and the crew were excellent—very friendly and knowledgeable. Their narration was spot on. The vessel travels into open waters beyond the calm of Resurrection Bay, where many orcas are found, so expect some wave action. We spent most of our time on deck enjoying the fresh air without issues, although Bonine and Dramamine are available on board for those who might get seasick. The bar offers reasonably priced drinks and snacks ($2 for soda, $3 for hot cocoa, etc.). It's best to dress in warm layers, including a hat and gloves, and binoculars are a must. Highly recommend this tour!
Even with the challenging weather, including wind and rain, our family thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We encountered orcas, sea otters, and a variety of other wildlife. There were numerous waterfalls, and we even passed beneath one. The crew was attentive, frequently checking on us and assisting with any seasickness. I highly recommend this experience.
Our experience on the Orca Quest was fantastic. The complimentary coffee and tea were appreciated given the chilly weather. We spotted around four orcas, even identifying one from the pod. Additionally, we saw sea otters, bald eagles with their young, seals, and numerous Dall's porpoises. There were also many birds and puffins. Listening to the orcas communicating through the hydrophone was particularly enjoyable. Overall, it was an excellent outing that offered a wealth of knowledge.
Our experience was fantastic! The staff on the boat were incredibly friendly and helpful. We witnessed a lot of wildlife, but even without that, the views were breathtaking. The scenery alone made the trip worthwhile.
The issue was that they did not cancel and provide a refund when other companies in Seward did. While the poor weather was beyond Major Marine's control, their failure to call off the trip was their mistake.
We truly enjoyed our tour of Resurrection Bay. Although we faced some bad weather, the team was very flexible, allowing us to swap from a six-hour to a four-hour tour due to high waves, and they smoothly handled our refund. During the shorter cruise, we spotted humpback whales, mountain goats, bald eagles, otters, porpoises, and more, even with the rain and choppy waters. I advise bringing sea sickness medication. You are assigned tables, eliminating the need to rush aboard. There's an indoor area for warmth, but the views outside are spectacular. They did an excellent job under challenging conditions. Highly recommend.
We had an incredible day, spotting various species of whales and birds. The staff was friendly, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable. We are definitely planning to book again this summer.
We took the 6-hour tour and it was exceptional. Captain Mike was a wonderful guide, sharing many interesting facts about marine life. The lunch provided was excellent. This experience was truly memorable.
