Four hours by private SUV or minivan from Semarang Cruise Port — includes guided access to Borobudur's upper levels and panoramic views of the temple.
This private tour offers a convenient excursion to Borobudur Temple from the Semarang Cruise Port, taking about four hours in a comfortable new SUV or minivan. Your early pickup ensures you beat the crowds, allowing for a more intimate experience with this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you'll explore Borobudur’s intricate carvings and architecture while learning about the relief panels that illustrate the life of Buddha and Javanese culture. The tour includes special access to the upper levels for an up-close view of the stupas and Buddha statues, which not all visitors get to experience. Expect to return well before your cruise's large group departs.

Zuqi, along with our driver, provided an exceptional tour and experience. We arrived ahead of the cruise tour buses, and he stuck with us throughout the climb. This package was fantastic, especially since it included access to the Nirvana level, which our cruise guide Ian indicated was a rare opportunity. Zuqi captured our moments with photos and videos, creating a lovely 2-minute reel set to music that truly encapsulates our day. We also enjoyed drinks on the beach, fed monkeys, sampled durian (which Rob liked more than I did), visited a Hindu temple, and indulged in buffet lunch and souvenir shopping. I genuinely told Zuqi that he was the best guide of our two-week cruise through Malaysia and Indonesia, where we booked several private tours. His insights and commentary were outstanding. When we plan our return, we will definitely reach out to Zuqi again.
The experience was exceptional, credited largely to our guide Wisnu. He and our driver, possibly Yahya, were already there to greet us, even though we disembarked 30 minutes ahead of schedule. We reached Borobudur well before the arrival of the ship's buses. Wisnu's close ties to the area, including his father’s former role in the landscaping department at Borobudur, helped us quickly gather our upper-level passes and join the next mandatory staff-guided tour. We were glad to have him accompany us, as he provided valuable insights and maximized our time during the free period before our entry time expired. Having played in the park as a child, Wisnu’s intimate knowledge of the site allowed us to bypass crowds and lengthy waits for shuttles to the car park and pickup zone. We even enjoyed a leisurely lunch and returned to Semarang before the ship's tour buses, despite the New Year’s Eve traffic. Having traveled extensively over the past 40 years and encountered numerous tour guides, I can confidently say Wisnu was among the absolute best. If you're considering an independent upper-level tour at Borobudur, I highly recommend it.
The journey from the port took some time, but the vehicle was clean and comfortable, and our driver was very safe. We also had a wonderfully friendly and knowledgeable English-speaking guide who shared fascinating insights about the country and region, making the ride enjoyable. Visiting the Borobudur World Heritage Site was extremely captivating, and everything was well-organized there.
Our guide Agung and driver Avan greeted us punctually at the cruise port. Although the SUV was clean and appeared to be in good condition, we had trouble with the back seat belts. After a 10-minute effort, they managed to fix one belt, but the other side only had a shoulder harness, which made me uncomfortable, so Agung kindly took that seat and I sat in the front. The journey to Borobudur lasted over two hours, and we appreciated the scenic countryside along the way. Agung spoke excellent English and was very friendly and knowledgeable, which made the drive enjoyable. The temple was enormous and impressive, and they provided sandals that turned out to be nice souvenirs. We had a small group with a temple guide and explored up to the second-highest level, which was fascinating. We truly loved the temple experience! Afterward, although we declined lunch since we weren’t hungry, Agung recommended a batik demonstration, which was captivating, and we ended up purchasing shirts. We returned to the port with ample time. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour and were particularly impressed with Agung as our guide.
Joko was a fantastic guide, and the tour was incredibly well organized. Borobudur is stunning and absolutely worth visiting.
The journey from the cruise port to Borobudur Temple was lengthy. While I appreciate its significance as the largest Buddhist temple globally, I wouldn't make that trek again.
Visiting Borobudur this way was fantastic, particularly for those with limited time. An exceptional driver and an insightful tour guide made all the difference. He kept us updated throughout the journey and provided thorough explanations at the temple. He's truly a valuable resource for the company.
Our visit to Borobudur was fantastic. The guide had extensive knowledge, enriching our understanding of Indonesia's history. We were picked up and returned to our ship punctually, despite the busy port. We strongly recommend this tour.
What an incredible experience. The journey from the Temple, combined with the engaging conversation and insightful learning, made for truly unforgettable moments.
Budi truly made the tour experience exceptional. He arrived early, reached out with texts, and had signs prepared for easy identification. The tour company was flexible in accommodating our friends who joined later. Budi’s extensive knowledge about the area's history and the temple was impressive. He took care of our shoes and even created a memorable video for us. His passion for guiding is contagious. This was as perfect of a tour as one could hope for.
