Three days, two nights at a locally-operated jungle camp — wildlife spotting on the Kinabatangan River with a focus on conservation and community.
This three-day, two-night stay at Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp offers a unique chance to engage with the Kinabatangan River's wildlife, all while supporting the local river people tribe who manage the camp. The location is intentionally isolated, providing a quieter experience compared to the busy lodges along the river.
With a strict limit of 10 guests at a time, the camp ensures a more intimate wildlife viewing experience. Daily tours allow for close encounters with various species, with fewer boats vying for the same sight. Your stay also contributes to conservation efforts, including the rainforest carbon offset project, which supports local communities by purchasing tropical seedlings. Be prepared for rustic but special accommodations that focus on authenticity and ecological responsibility.
Reviews
This experience offered a unique jungle immersion with a guaranteed change of scenery. The camp, the only one along the river, provides exceptional access to the jungle's treasures. Jay and his team ensure we explore the diverse flora and fauna, and we were lucky enough to see six orangutans, including a pair near the camp. Daily excursions on foot and by boat are available, while the rest of the time can be spent relaxing in a hammock overlooking the river and its wildlife, such as crocodiles and fishing martins. Thank you for this amazing adventure!
The highlight of our time in Borneo was undoubtedly our 3-day, 2-night stay at the jungle camp. Jay and his team were outstanding, going above and beyond to ensure our comfort. Although we were a bit apprehensive about staying in the jungle, our worries quickly vanished. Within just three minutes of arrival, we heard the calls of orangutans and hurried to the back of the camp, where we spotted a young male swinging joyfully among the trees. This experience encapsulated our trip—thrilling, fulfilling, and occasionally breathtaking, complemented by the team's warm hospitality and the simple yet clean accommodations. I highly recommend it; you won't regret a single moment!
We participated in a 4-day, 3-night tour that was incredible. Our guide, Jay, was outstanding and had an astonishing ability to spot animals, especially at night. Being immersed in the rainforest was a unique experience, and the accommodations and meals were satisfactory. While our tour was fantastic, I would suggest the 3-day, 2-night option instead, as the final day of the longer tour replicates the first day's itinerary.
This was a truly wild and authentic adventure, just as anticipated. The team was very engaged in revealing all the wonders and charm of that captivating environment.
The Borneo Wildlife Tour is an absolute must-do. The accommodation at the jungle lodge was genuine, and we had plenty of chances to observe wildlife, including Orangutans eating fruit from trees near the camp. We enjoyed several boat trips and spotted many hornbills, different monkeys, crocodiles, and more. The camp offered comfort, and the food was enjoyable. I highly recommend this experience.
What an amazing adventure! The tour guide Dean and his team were extremely friendly and helpful, able to spot crocodiles in no time. We were lucky to see two orangutans in the trees upon arrival, and the boat rides offered plenty of sightings, including macaques, proboscis monkeys, kingfishers, monitor lizards, and cranes. The accommodations were basic but comfortable, fitting for a jungle camp, and the meals were similar. Having raincoats, sandals, and binoculars proved very useful. I couldn't find any faults with this jungle experience.
This is an experience you cannot miss, and we will certainly return. We encountered a lot of wildlife and had plenty of quality time with my family.
The experience was not very active, primarily involving sitting in a boat and observing animals from a distance. However, it provided an authentic jungle experience that we thoroughly enjoyed. Our guide Jaii was an enthusiastic jungle lover who showed great respect for the environment. We learned a lot about the area and its wildlife, and he had an impressive ability to spot animals even from afar, which was quite captivating. Just be aware that many animals are indeed distant, so I highly recommend bringing quality binoculars to enhance your experience. The food served was good; while it wasn't gourmet, it was tasty. I recommend this tour highly, as it is vastly different from the commercialized cruises in Kota Kinabalu, which felt damaging to the natural setting. Also, prepare for plenty of insects, including mosquitoes.
Fantastic experience with an amazing team, great location, and enjoyable activities. The guides were exceptional, and the rooms were of high quality. I appreciate everything provided.
This experience was just what we were looking for, offering the chance to observe a variety of wildlife in their natural habitat. Jai was an excellent guide, impressively spotting animals from a distance as highlighted in past reviews. Our early morning, evening, and night excursions—both on foot and by boat—were complemented by an abundance of local food. The time in between adventures allowed for relaxation, enjoying the landscape, chatting, or even napping with fellow travelers. I strongly recommend this trip for anyone interested in Borneo's wildlife, from casual observers to avid enthusiasts. While the accommodations are basic, I believe that anything more luxurious would detract from the overall experience. Be prepared for heat and sweat. We had an amazing time with great hosts, seeing hornbills, crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, macaques, lemurs, a monitor lizard, numerous kingfishers, civet cats, sea eagles, and countless insects, and also encountered a snake. Unfortunately, we did not spot any orangutans. Don't forget to bring binoculars, a poncho, a flashlight, and wear long sleeves and trousers, as well as the best camera you can afford. An iPhone can capture great shots, but some moments might be too distant.
