Two days, one night in a unique jungle camp on the Kinabatangan River, offering intimate wildlife experiences with local guides and a commitment to conservation.
Spend two days and one night at Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp, a local-operated lodge along the Kinabatangan River. The camp prides itself on limited guest numbers, hosting only 10 travellers to ensure an authentic and intimate experience with the surrounding wildlife and nature.
The jungle camp is set in a less-travelled area, meaning wildlife sightings are more personal — one boat for each monkey, rather than the crowded conditions of other lodges. During your stay, you'll also contribute to a rainforest carbon offset project, with funds directed towards purchasing tropical seedlings from local community members. This trip is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts looking for a genuine connection with both nature and the local culture.

What an incredible experience. We went for 2 days and 1 night, spotting four different monkey species, including a wild orangutan, along with crocodiles and many fascinating birds. While we didn't see the elephants, spending the night in the jungle and waking up surrounded by monkeys was absolutely worth it. I would have loved to extend our stay for a second night if time had permitted. Our guide was very knowledgeable, skilled at spotting wildlife, and shared some entertaining stories about the area. Having brought a beer to enjoy by the riverside at night would have made it even better. Overall, it was a fantastic time, and I would gladly do it again.
The jungle experience was incredible. We were picked up from our hotel, enjoyed lunch en route, and took a small boat trip to our basic but charming accommodation in the jungle, which was exactly what we wanted. The wildlife encounters were unforgettable, including flying foxes, long-tailed langurs, proboscis monkeys, kingfishers, rainforest frogs, millipedes, and crocodiles. Jay, our guide, was outstanding, knowledgeable, and had a keen eye for spotting wildlife along the river. It was truly an amazing wild adventure.
Overall, it was a great experience. I recommend that the driver provides a detailed explanation of the tour activities upon picking us up from the hotel, as we were unclear about what to expect next during the drive. On a positive note, the team at the camping area was outstanding.
We spent 2 days and 1 night in the jungle with my husband and it was an excellent adventure. They arranged our hotel pickup and drop-off the following day. The guides were exceptional—passionate and friendly. The food was enjoyable. We had the opportunity to take 2 boat trips and hike through the jungle at night, where we spotted monkeys, crocodiles, spiders, and various birds. Unfortunately, we didn't see elephants due to heavy rain driving them inland. We highly recommend this experience.
Our time in the jungle was a lovely experience, truly returning to the basics. As a young family, we managed a one-night stay, which felt sufficient, though the night was quite hot and humid. The nature surrounding us was stunning during the day, and the locals were friendly and knowledgeable about the plants and animals.
You won't encounter other tourists in this location. The residents of Tanjung Bulat make every effort to showcase the incredible nature and wildlife. Spending the night in the rainforest is truly a unique experience.
This was a wonderful experience thanks to Jay and the other staff who were very friendly and helpful. The field may be simple, but I didn't feel like I missed anything. We didn’t see a lot of wildlife, but each day can be different, and the serenity of being in the countryside was still amazing. The beds were generally comfortable. The activity runs from 6 PM to 10 PM, after which it's completely dark. I highly recommend this experience.
Jay and his team at Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp served as exceptional guides and hosts. After a two-hour drive from our hotel, we arrived and took a boat to the camp, which was comfortable and clean. Shortly after settling in, we enjoyed a boat ride where we encountered various monkeys, birds, and even a crocodile, though we didn't see any orangutans at that point. Following a delicious dinner, we embarked on a nature walk around the camp, spotting birds, snakes, and a tarantula. The next morning, during an excellent breakfast, Jay alerted us to the orangutans in the trees above. Seeing them swing gracefully from branch to branch was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip. After breakfast, we took another boat ride further along the river to observe more wildlife before packing up and heading back to Sendekan.
We chose this camp to truly immerse ourselves in the jungle experience at a basic level. Our pick-up from the Sandakan hotel was prompt, and we made a stop in a small town for lunch. The camp is situated in a remote area by the river, ensuring you won't encounter any other visitors, which was exactly what we desired. The food was satisfying, even for vegetarians, though you should bring your own drinks if you'd like soda. We stayed in a room with cozy beds, a fan, and mosquito nets. The bathrooms and showers were clean, aside from occasional lizards or spiders. The river safari was fantastic, allowing us to see a range of wildlife, with hornbills and kingfishers being particular highlights, and all our inquiries were addressed. The jungle trek was definitely the pinnacle of our experience. Initially, we saw little, but Jay pointed out a tarantula that was larger than our hands. We encountered numerous animals, making it a truly magical experience that we will always remember. This is an absolute must-do.
The wildlife viewing was incredible, and the guides were both friendly and knowledgeable. While the facilities were quite basic, they met the expectations set for the experience.
