Two nights in a local-run jungle camp near Kinabatangan River, includes visits to Gomantong Cave and a focus on responsible tourism practices.
Spend three days and two nights at Tanjung Bulat Jungle Camp, a community-operated retreat in a remote area of the Kinabatangan River. This unique camp limits its guests to just ten at a time, allowing for a more personal and authentic experience away from the mass tourism often found in the region. You'll enjoy guided activities that may include boat trips for wildlife viewing, where encounters are less crowded compared to other lodges.
The itinerary features a visit to Gomantong Cave, famed for its swiftlet nests and unique ecosystem. The camp promotes environmental responsibility with initiatives like tree planting, so your stay directly contributes to local conservation efforts. Prepare for a basic yet enriching stay, and don't forget to engage with local culture during your visit.
Reviews
I truly enjoyed every aspect of the experience. It felt genuine, straightforward, and authentic. The staff and guides were fantastic, accommodating our request to postpone the tour by two days on short notice because of health issues. The manager, Afiq, even offered us his room since no other accommodations were available.
The experience truly felt like being immersed in the jungle, far from busy tourist spots and high-end amenities. With only a handful of visitors, it was an exclusive environment. We opted for three nights and four days to fully disconnect from our travels and increase our chances of seeing orangutans. On the second day, we were fortunate enough to spot one near our camp, thanks to our attentive guide Jai, who heard it approaching. Throughout our stay, we encountered numerous crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, various birds including hornbills and kingfishers, and even a mini python during a night walk. The itinerary included evening and morning river cruises, as well as time spent exploring caves where we also saw an orangutan. Jai was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, making sure we had the best chance to see wildlife. This tour is not about luxury; it's about peace, nature, and an unforgettable experience. I recommend a minimum of two nights, with three being ideal. There’s no internet and three daily meals are provided. September was a great time for low river levels which aided our orangutan spotting. Thank you, Jai and the team, for a memorable adventure.
I had a great experience on this tour as a solo traveler, and the guide was exceptionally knowledgeable. While it’s not the best spot for elephant sightings (I didn’t see any), it’s fantastic for orangutans—I saw four and got very close.
This was an incredible experience. We encountered four orangutans and had wild civets and monitor lizards passing through the camp. We spotted a gibbon and proboscis monkeys in the nearby trees. The daytime cruises were enjoyable, with numerous monkeys, birds, and crocodiles. During the night walks, we saw sleeping snakes, birds, and a flying lemur. The staff was wonderful, and our guide Jay was exceptionally kind and skilled at spotting wildlife. The beautiful setting felt private, as there were no other visitors. I would absolutely return.
This experience is truly one of a kind. Initially, we were unsure about the basic facilities and bucket showers, but it turned out to be fantastic. The beds had bedding and a light blanket, and the showers felt more refreshing than regular ones. Jay and the team were welcoming and well-informed; we gained valuable insights into the local history, customs, and wildlife. We encountered many animals, including crocodiles and proboscis monkeys. It's also heartening to know the crew supports rainforest conservation, planting a tree for every guest. Bringing a fan, flashlight, and light, long-sleeved clothing would be wise. We strongly recommend spending time with Jay and his crew for an authentic experience.
Very rustic and incredibly amazing! I can't imagine a better way to spend 3 days and 2 nights. The entire experience, from hotel pickup to boat drop-off, was well organized. Remember to bring your own personal items like soap, hair products, towels, and flip flops. If you're prone to overheating, I recommend a battery-operated fan since electricity is available only from 6 PM to 10 PM. The staff genuinely care about guest welfare, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything. We encountered various wildlife, including Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys, and saw many birds and some crocodiles. The night hikes and boating excursions are a must—they were fantastic. Keep in mind that this is not a 5-star resort; I’d rate it between half and 1 star. They prioritize safety, which means trips may be rescheduled or canceled due to storms or flooding. If you're adventurous and don’t require luxury, I suggest you go for it.
