Quilmes Ruins
Salta, Argentina

The Quilmes Ruins are the remnants of a large pre-Columbian fortress built by the Quilmes people between the 9th and 16th centuries, located on the slopes of the Sierra del Cajón near Cafayate. Visitors find sprawling terraced structures made of locally sourced stone, which offer insight into the social and agricultural practices of an ancient culture that resisted Spanish colonization for over a century.
Plan to explore the site in the morning, when the light highlights the stonework and the surrounding landscape. There's a visitor centre nearby that provides context, but the real draw is the sense of history that permeates the ruins, enhanced by the dramatic backdrop of the Andes.
