Kennecott Copper Mine (Bingham Canyon Mine) in Salt Lake City — view 2
The Kennecott Copper Mine, also known as Bingham Canyon Mine, is an enormous open-pit mine located about 32 kilometres southwest of Salt Lake City. In operation since 1906, it is one of the largest man-made excavations in the world, revealing layers of rock that showcase geological history alongside massive equipment and mining operations. Visiting the mine offers panoramic views from lookout points, especially compelling during the spring and autumn months when the weather is clear. The surrounding Oquirrh Mountains also provide a scenic backdrop, and the visitor centre contains exhibits about mining history and technology. Beware of fluctuating weather conditions, which can shift rapidly in the mountains.
