For those who appreciate a classic romantic vision of Spanish cities, Salamanca embodies that idea perfectly with its beautifully weathered sandstone from the Golden Age. This enchanting place is not just a figment of imagination but a real destination found in the cooler western Meseta. Thankfully, the best English-speaking guide you can find is also here. Martoke is incredibly knowledgeable, witty, and familiar with every corner of this historic city of academia. She shares insights into the ancient graduation traditions of Spain's first university, discusses historical figures like Adares, and celebrates Salamanca's role in shaping revolutionary ideas across various disciplines. Fluent in multiple languages, she is an engaging, curious, and delightful companion. My short visit left Salamanca engraved in my mind as a genuine dream destination, all thanks to her ability to bring it vividly to life.
