Two and a half hours on a self-guided audio tour — explore California's Gold Country, with historical insights from a local storyteller and the flexibility to stop as you please.
This self-guided audio tour takes you along Highway 49 from Jackson to Angels Camp, exploring California's rich Gold Country history. Designed for flexibility, the tour lasts approximately 150 minutes but allows for pauses at any points of interest along the way.
The audio guide, produced by California native Lynn Momboisse, shares stories from the Gold Rush era and the earlier Miwok Native American inhabitants. After booking, you'll receive instructions and a unique code to access the VoiceMap app, which provides GPS-enabled directions and automatic playback. It's a great way to enjoy the journey at your own pace and can even be used virtually from home before or after your travel.

This was a very engaging and educational experience. It provided an excellent overview of Gold country. I really appreciated the VoiceMap app, which played audio at just the right moments and offered the option to make stops.
I am continually impressed by the wealth of historical treasures and the rich heritage in our region. There is so much history to explore. The tour was excellently curated, providing invaluable insights into life during that era. I look forward to experiencing more of these tours.
We really enjoyed ourselves. The stories were engaging, and the flexible pace allowed us to stop whenever we wished. Plus, the audio tour is ours to keep for future use. It might be beneficial to review the route beforehand for those less familiar with technology, but overall, it was user-friendly. We completed two tours in a single day, which took the whole day, so we suggest one tour per day to fully explore. We will definitely be looking for more of these tours in the future.
This tour offers an excellent value for just $12, providing a thorough exploration of California Gold Country’s charming towns, stunning landscapes, and rich heritage, despite a couple of minor issues. Firstly, the GPS-based system requires strict adherence to its driving instructions, including small details. Even slight deviations, such as skipping stops at the starting point or during transitions, can disrupt the narration. Secondly, if you miss a turn, as we did on two occasions, the program simply goes silent without warning. We managed to find our way back without major problems, but the program would benefit from better guidance before starting.
My husband and I really enjoyed visiting small gold mining towns that we wouldn't have seen otherwise. The walking tours provided clear directions and great descriptions of the attractions. We appreciated the stories shared about the towns and their residents during the driving segments. The optional side trips are definitely worthwhile. Be prepared to spend an entire day if you want to fully enjoy everything the tour offers, as it involves substantial walking and driving.
It began strongly, but then it suddenly stopped working halfway through, leaving us without any guidance or mapping. We had to rely on Waze to return to our motel. I plan to contact customer service for a refund, as I've seen other iPhone users report similar issues. If they refuse to refund me, I will be very frustrated.
The tour was unusable for me since I was driving from Angels Camp to Jackson. It felt like a waste of money. Ensure you begin your journey in Jackson.
I had a great time discovering California's history and visiting sites I had previously only heard about. The less common route made for an enjoyable drive home.
This tour offered an opportunity to visit sites we wouldn't have discovered on our own. The commentary during the drive enriched our experience significantly.
The tour was well organized, easy to navigate, and quite engaging. While the third part of the Highway 49 tour lacks some historical sites, we still found it enjoyable. Just one more section left to explore. It's advisable to go on weekends when more shops, restaurants, and museums are available.
