• A 30-minute drive takes us to Ad-Diriyah, situated on the western side of the Wadi Hanifah, a dry riverbed that only sees water flow during heavy rains. Ad-Diriyah served as the capital of Najd (the central plateau of the Arabian Peninsula) from the 15th century until the early 18th century. This location is significant as the birthplace of the first Saudi Kingdom and was recognized for its historical value when it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, noted for its exceptional example of Najdi architecture. The significance of Ad-Diriyah extends back thousands of years as it was part of an ancient trade and pilgrimage route, serving as a gathering point for travelers journeying to or from Asia, Africa, and Europe. During the drive to the city, there will be opportunities to observe the swift growth of this cosmopolitan capital, which the Saudi government has planned to develop into the largest metropolis in the Middle East over the next decade.
